San Francisco, Calif. – The SF State softball team will at long last make their 2014 home opener. After spending the first 15 games on the road the Gators will host Cal State Stanislaus in a four game California Collegiate Athletic Association series beginning on Saturday.
With rain in the forecast this weekend, the schedule has been altered a bit. Friday's contest which was slated for a 12:00 p.m. first pitch has been moved to Saturday, at 1:00 p.m. with game two taking place a half hour after the first games completion. Saturday's contests have been moved to Sunday with game one scheduled for a noon start.
The Gators (5-10/1-7 CCAA) have started conference play on a bit of a rocky start; dropping back-to-back series at the hands of Cal State East Bay and most recently a four game sweep at the hands of CSU Dominguez Hills.
As a team, SF State is hitting .271 which ranks ninth in the CCAA; however, the Gators offense has been heating up as of late. Leading that upward trend is sophomore center fielder
Jennifer Lewis and junior shortstop
Courtney Gravel. The two have set the tempo for the Gators, with Gravel setting the table by getting on base and Lewis knocking her in.
Lewis is currently hitting .439 which ranks sixth in the conference. Over the last eight games, Lewis has 11 of her 18 hits, including three of her five doubles. Last weekend against the Toros, Lewis hit a scorching .545 going 6-for-11 with two doubles and three runs driven in.
Gravel is second on the team, hitting .367 on this young season. She is 14
th in the conference in runs scored, having crossed the plate 11 times this year. Last weekend, Gravel hit .308 going 4-for-13 with three runs scored, seemingly leading off every inning with a rally starting base hit.
As a team, SF State has a 5.29 ERA, in 88.2 innings they have allowed 131 hits, 82 runs, 67 earned with 35 walks and 31 strike outs. Leading the team in the circle is freshman lefty
Megan Clark who is 2-3 with a 4.54 ERA. She has made seven starts, throwing four complete games and one shutout. In 37.0 innings pitched she has allowed 42 hits, 25 runs, 24 earned with 19 walks and 19 strike outs.
Last weekend, reliever
Jenny Obbema (0-1) led the Gators out of the pen, making three appearances, throwing a team-high 7.1 innings.
Cal State Stanislaus enters this weekend's contests with an overall record of 7-10 and are 3-5 in the CCAA. On Tuesday the Warriors split a double header against Notre Dame de Namur, losing the first game 4-5 before winning the nightcap 10-2.
As a team the Warriors are hitting .310 which ranks sixth in the conference, eight starters are hitting .300 or better. Leading the squad is freshman infielder Deenah San Luis and junior outfielder Angela Mendoza who are both hitting .357. Senior catcher Amy Droege leads the team with 17 RBI and is tied for the team lead with two home runs.
In the circle, the Warriors boast a team ERA of 3.78; in 111.0 innings pitched they have surrendered 126 hits, 82 runs, 60 earned with 69 walks and 66 strike outs. Junior pitcher Jessica Vardy leads the team with a 4-5 record and a 3.04 ERA. In 55.1 innings she's surrendered 67 hits 32 runs, 24 of them earned, with 25 walks and 27 strike outs.
