Gators Take Down Oaks, 28-18

Calvin Nicholls Picked Up a 14-5 Major Decision WIn in the Gators' 28-18 Win at #15 Menlo
 
ATHERTON, Calif.---  The SF State Gators improve to 8-4 in duals with a 28-18 non-conference win over the Menlo College Oaks in a Bay Area battle between nationally ranked teams at Hayes-Prim Pavilion in Atherton, Calif. Calvin Nicholls win by a 14-5 major decision secured the win for the 16th ranked Gators.
 
The Oaks, who are ranked 15th in the nation in NAIA, started the dual with a win by the 12th ranked Troy Lakin by a 5-2 decision over the Gators' Marc Collier.  The Gators took a 9-3 lead as they won they next matches by major decision and technical fall. 
 
At 133, Jordan Gurrola won by a 9-0 major decision over the Oaks' Edgar Paez.  Dylan Phillipy then recorded a 16-0 technical fall win at the 2:21 mark over Menlo's Steele Escobedo, who is currently ranked 15th in the nation in NAIA.
 
Menlo cut into the Gator lead, 9-6, as the hosts won by a slim decision by Jason Ladd over the Gators' Daniel Flores at 141.  Ladd is currently 16th in the nation.  The Gators doubled their lead with a 4-0 decision by Tavis Ino at 157 over David Rios to give the visitors a 12-6 lead.
 
Eric Lopez, who is currently number one in NAIA at 165, tied the dual at 12-12 with a win by fall (2:10) over the Gators' A.J. Simon.
 
SF State retook the lead with a 14-5 major decision at 174 with Calvin Nicholls recording the win over the Oaks' Paul Bracamonte to give the Gators a 16-12 lead.  The visitors took the next two matches by forfeit at 184 (Zach Jimenez) and 197 (Andrew Reggi) as they took a 28-12 lead.
 
The Oaks won the final bout of the dual as Justin Harrison won by fall over the Gators' Jesse Campos.  Harrison is currently 15th in the nation at 285 to make the final SF State 28, Menlo 18.
 
The Gators will return to the mat in 8 days as they will travel to Riverside, Calif., for an 8pm Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual with the Lancers of Cal Baptist.  This will be the Gators' last dual before the 2014 NCAA Division II Super Regional IV/Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships in Grand Junction, Colo., at Colorado Mesa.
