Hawks Take Two From Gators

OAKLAND--- In a series that was supposed to start on Friday evening, it was the Holy Names University Hawks (3-3) sweeping the first two games of the three-game series this evening at Laney College's Field of Dreams in Oakland 12-2 and 3-0.  The two teams will finish off the series this Tuesday, February 11 in Oakland for a scheduled 6pm PST first pitch at the Field of Dreams.
 
In the first game, SF State lost 12-2 to the Hawks as the hosts had 13 hits led by lead-off hitter Matthew Dufford who went four-for-four and scored three times.  Caleb Parker and Dustin Zeisler each had two hits.
 
SF State just had four hits off of the pitching trio of Jesse Savage, Luis Briseno and Mark Scannell.  Savage (2-0) pitched six scoreless innings, giving up just one hit, striking out four and walking three. 
 
Nolan Sheridan (0-2) recorded the loss for the Gators, pitching three innings, giving up four hits, six runs (one earned) while striking out three and walking three.  SF State had 7 errors in the opener at the soggy Laney College Field of Dreams.
 
Dufford lead off the game for the Hawks with an infield single and then stole second and third. He scored the game's first run on a wild pitch with two outs.
 
The Hawks broke the gators open as they scored seven runs in the four innings starting with a four-run second inning.  In that inning, Holy Names scored four runs on just three hits and two Gator errors.  The hosts took a 9-0 lead into the final three innings.
 
SF State scored its first run in the seventh inning with Will Hein reaching base when he was hit by a pitch with two outs.  He stole second and scored on a run scoring single by Wes Carswell.
 
Holy Names came back with a run in its half of the seventh to take a 10-1 lead.
 
The Hawks added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to increase their lead to 12-1 heading in the final frame.
 
SF State added the game's final run in its half of the ninth as Carswell drove in Dalton Pizzuti with a sacrifice fly to right field after Pizzuti reached on a lead-off single.  He went to second on a wild pitch and scored two batters later.
 
Carswell finished the opener driving in both runs while Grady Espinosa was two-for-three for the visitors. 
 
The Gators (1-3) were shutout in the night cap 3-0 as Micah Ashburn and Jayce Bannister combined on a two-hit complete game shutout.  Ashburn (1-0) pitched five scoreless innings of two hit ball while striking out five and walking two.  Bannister pitched the final two innings, giving up no hits and no runs while striking out two.
 
Preston Tarter (1-1) recorded the loss for the visitors, pitching 4.2 innings while giving up three hits and three runs (two earned), striking out one and walking five.  Cory Davis pitched the final 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, giving up just one hit, striking out one and walking two.
 
The Hawks got the only run that Ashburn needed in the fourth inning on a run scoring ground out by pinch hitter Matthew Farrias that drove in Caleb Parker with the game's first run.  Parker reached on a lead-off walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt and went to third on a single. 
 
SF State had a chance to take an early lead in its half of the first inning.  Dillon Meyer, who finished the night cap two-for-three, had a lead-off single.  He went to second on an infield ground out by Fernando Escobar.  With one out, Grady Espinosa walked.  Meyer then was forced out on a ground out by Mark Lindsay.  Ashburn then struck out the next Gator to end the inning.
 
The Gators had another chance in their half of the third inning.  Meyer had another lead-off single, but was thrown out at second trying to stretch it to a double.  Then with two outs, Espinosa was hit by a pitch and stole second.  Lindsay walked to put runners at first and second, but Ashburn struck out the final Gator batter. 
 
Zach Verlaan hit a two-out two-run home run to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning.  Verlaan hit his home run after Benjamin Gamba reached on a Gator error as the Hawks held on for the 3-0 win.
