Grady Espinosa hit a 0-1 pitch down the left field line with one out to drive in
Joe Chedid with the game-winning run in the Gators' 12-11 14-inning victory over the visiting Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes this afternoon at Maloney Field.
Nolan Sheridan (2-3) pitched 6 innings of five-hit scoreless relief to pick up the win for the victors.
The Gators (10-6, 5-1 CCAA) took a 4-0 lead after their half of the first inning.
Cal State San Bernardino came right back and score five runs in its half of the second inning with Nolan Almodovar's two-out single to left single giving the Coyotes a 5-4 lead.
Mark Lindsay tied the game in the Gators' half of the second inning on a one-out single up the middle that drove in Espinosa.
The Coyotes took a 6-5 lead on William Ouellette's single in the third. They added another run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 9-5 lead.
SF State retook the lead with a six-run fifth inning.
Garrett Heisinger had a lead-off single and went to second when Chedid was hit by a pitch.
Trevor Diskin singled to load the bases and then
Fernando Escobar reached on a fielder's choice. Espinosa had an infield single to bring in Chedid.
Dillon Meyer then hit a 1-1 pitch to right field for a two-run double. Lindsay was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Bryce Cherry drove in Espinosa with a ground out.
Carter Loud gave the Gators an 11-9 lead with a two-out two-run double that brought with Meyer and Lindsay.
The game remained Gators, 11-9, until the Coyote half of the eighth inning. Brian Lockey singled to lead off the inning and went to third on a Trevor McMaster double down the left field line. Lockey scored on a Nick Oddo's sacrifice fly. With two outs, Aaron Owen tied the game with a single to right center.
The game stayed tied at 11-1 until the bottom of the fourteenth, Chedid lead off the inning with a single to left center. He advanced to second on a balk. Chedid advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Trevor Diskin. Escobar walked which set the table for Espinosa, who delivered with a single down the left field line.
The two teams scored 23 runs on 44 hits with Nick Oddo leading the way with five hits for the Coyotes. Matt LeVert (1-1) recorded the loss for the visitors, pitching 6.1 innings, giving up two hits and one run while striking out three.
Three Gators had three hits apiece in Espinosa, Lindsay and Diskin.
The two teams will conclude the four-game weekend conference with an 11am starting doubleheader tomorrow at Maloney Field. Game one will be a nine-inning affair and game two will be a seven-inning game.
