Gators Fall To No. 3 Cal Baptist In Extra Inning Pitcher’s Duel

Megan Clark was brilliant in the losing effort against No. 3 Cal Baptist on Saturday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 San Francisco, Calif. – Having already dropped the first game of a two-game non-conference double header the SF State softball team found itself in the middle of a tremendous pitcher's duel in the nightcap.  Starter Megan Clark allowed just five hits and was in total control from the start, unfortunately, the Gators were not able to score the crucial run as Cal Baptist took both games on Saturday, 13-4 in game one and 1-0 in eight innings in game two.

Clark (2-6) showed she had her best stuff early as she pitched around an error in the top of the first and did not allow a hit until the top of the third inning, a two-out bunt.

She only allowed seven base runners to reach, scattering five hits and two walks.  Until the top of the eighth inning she did not allow a base runner to reach third base, in fact, Clark only allowed two Lancers into scoring position all day.

Part of Clark's success on the day was her ability to get ahead and stay ahead, she retired the first batter of the inning in all eight innings.

A defensive miscue with one out led to the Lancers (22-7) putting a runner on third when Krista Mann singled to center field and advanced to third on an error by Jennifer Lewis.  Mann came around to score the deciding run on a base hit to shallow center field by Savanna Miller.

In the bottom half of the eighth inning the Gators (7-18) were retired in order by CBU's starter Kayla Hatch (7-3) who was just as sharp as Clark in the win.  Hatch went eight complete, scattering four hits, with two walks and two strike outs for the complete game shutout.

In game one the Gators were in a hole early, as the Lancers scored four runs in the first three innings.  Starter Emily Gibson (4-8) struggled with her command, as her first six pitchers were called balls.  She was lifted in favor of Jenny Obbema in the top of the fourth inning.

Gibson's line, three innings, four runs, three earned, with four walks and two strike outs.  Obbema went the rest of the way, going three innings, allowing eight hits, nine runs, three earned with a walk and a strike out.

The sixth inning proved to be the difference for the Gators in game one, as defensive miscues allowed for an eight run inning capped off by a three-run home run to put Cal Baptist up 10, 13-3.

The Gators scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI groundout by pinch hitter Torrey Rook, but in the end the Lancers earned the victory by way of the run rule.  Earning the win for CBU in game one was starter Belinda Renne who went six complete, surrendering six hits, four runs, two earned with a strike out.

The Gators will return to action on Wednesday, March 19 when SF State will host CCAA rival CSU Stanislaus for a mid-week double header starting at 1:30 p.m.  The two games will make up the games that were rained out on March 1.
