Gators Capture Weekend Series from CSUSB with DH Split

SAN FRANCISCO---   With this afternoon's conference doubleheader split, the SF State took the four-game series with the visiting Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes three games to one.  The Gators won game one today 4-3, but lost the night cap 4-3 in eight innings.  SF State is now 11-7 overall and 6-2 in the CCAA, which places them in first place in the conference.
 
In the opener, the Coyotes took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-out Brian Lockey RBI single that drove in Kevin Merriwether.  The Gators came back and tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning.  Grady Espinosa had a lead-off walk and went to second on a ground out by Dillon Meyer.  Espinosa scored on a single to right field by Mark Lindsay.
 
SF State took a 2-1 lead in its half of the fourth inning when Nick Jackson had a lead-off walk.  He later scored on a sacrifice fly by Carter Loud
 
Cal State San Bernardino tied the game on a Lockey two-out run scoring single in the seventh that drove in Nolan Almodovar. 
 
The visitors took the lead in the top of the eighth inning on a Meriwether run scoring double that drove in Trevor McMaster.
 
In the Gators half of the eighth, Wes Carswell had a lead-off single but was out on second on a fielder's choice by Fernando Escobar.  With the count 1-0, Espinosa hit his first home run of the season a two-run shot that gave the Gators a 4-3 lead.
 
Cory Davis came on in the ninth to record his sixth save and preserve the win for Joe Chedid (1-0).  Davis struck out the first batter he faced.  The next batter singled to righter.  The junior relief pitcher induced the next batter to a game-ending double play.
 
Chedid pitched one inning of relief, giving up two hits and one run while walking one. 
 
Jake Meloche (0-1) recorded the loss in the start for the Coyotes.
 
The Coyotes (4-13, 4-8 CCAA) won the night cap 4-3 in eight innings. 
 
SF State took a 1-0 lead on a Garrett Heisinger double that drove in Carter Loud in the bottom of the second inning. 
 
The Coyotes tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning on a Lockey two-out run scoring single. 
 
The game remained tied at 1-1, when Danny Souza scored on a Nick Jackson run scoring single to give the Gators a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
 
Cal State San Bernardino tied the game in its half of the sixth inning on an Aaron Owen infield single that brought in Spencer Bayless with the tying run.  The Coyotes took the lead on William Ouellette's run scoring two-out single in the seventh that brought in Almodovar. 
 
The Gators tied the game at 3-3 on a Loud two-out run scoring single that scored Jackson with the tying run.
 
Cal State San Bernardino retook the lead in its half of the eighth on a Almodovar two-out single up the middle that brought in McMaster with what proved to be the game-winnienr run.
 
The Gators had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth, Carswell had a lead-off single.  He went to second on a sacrifice by Souza.  Carswell advanced to third on a ground out by Escobar.  Brian Jipp induced the next Gator batter to ground out to end the game and give the visitors the 4-3 win.  Jipp (1-0), pitched two innings of four-hit ball, giving up one run and striking out two.
 
Tyler Cobb (0-1) recorded the loss for the Gators.  Trevor Diskin started the game for the Gators, pitching 5.1 innings of 8-hit ball, giving up two runs (one earned) while striking out one.
 
Jackson had three of the Gators' 11 hits while stealing two bases.  He also drove in a run and scored a run.  Lindsay had two hits for the hosts.
 
The Gators will return to Maloney Field to begin a home-away series with the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters this Friday, March 7 at 2pm for a single nine-inning game.  The series will move to Seaside, Calif., for an 11am starting doubleheader on Saturday, March 8.  The four-game series will conclude a week from today with a noon starting single game at Maloney Field.
