ROHNERT PARK--- Sonoma State senior pitcher George Asmus improved to 3-0 as he gave up six hits and pitched 7 scoreless innings while striking out six en route to the Seawolves' 7-0 win over the visiting SF State Gators this afternoon at Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park.
The Gators (12-11, 7-6 CCAA) had a chance to take the lead in the top of the first inning.
Dillon Meyer had a lead-off single, but was out at second on
Carter Loud's fielder choice. Loud went to second on a single by
Grady Espinosa, but was thrown out at third on a double steal attempts by the visitors.
Sonoma State took advantage of two walks and a hits batsman by the Gator starter,
Preston Tarter in its half of the first inning as the Seawolves took a 2-0 lead. Daniel Caresio walked with one out and went to second on a a single by Alex Crosby. Eric Ehlow walked to load the bases for Garrett Schwartz, who was hit by a pitch on the third pitch he saw. With two outs, Justin Serrao hit an infield single that brought in Crosby with the inning's second run.
SF State had another chance to score in the third inning. Meyer reached base on a two-out single that he went to second on an errant throw. Loud then walked, but Asmus struck out the next batter for one of his six strikeouts on the day.
The Seawolves (11-9, 9-4 CCAA) broke the game open with a four-run third inning. Ehlow and Schwartz lead off the inning reaching base on a hit batsman and a walk. They advanced a base on a sacrifice by Tyler Glenn. Serrao hit the second pitch he saw for an infield single that scored Ehlow.
Schwartz scored on a failed pick-off throw. Stogner hit a two-out double to right field to give the hosts a 6-0 lead.
Sonoma State added another run in the sixth to increase its lead to 7-0.
Preston Tarter (1-5) picked up the loss in the start for the visitors.
Tyler Cobb came on in relief for the Gators and pitching five innings, giving up three hits and one run while striking out one.
The Gators had 7 hits on the day with Espinosa and Meyer each with two apiece.
The hosts had 9 hits led by Serrao's two.
Ricky Clark came on in the eighth for the Seawolves and pitched two scoreless innings of one-hit ball. Clark also struck out two Gator batters.
The four-game weekend series will now move to SF State as the two teams will play an 11am starting doubleheader tomorrow at Maloney Field. The series finale will be this Sunday, March 23 back in Rohnert Park at Seawolf Diamond.
