Gators Rally Falls Short as Seawolves Sweep Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN FRANCISCO SF State's rally fell short in game two of this afternoon's doubleheader at Maloney Field as the Gators lost 8-7 in the nightcap to the visiting Sonoma State Seawolves (13-9, 11-4 CCAA).  The Seawolves won the opener 13-4 as they swept the doubleheader from the Gators.
 
In the night cap, the Seawolves took a 1-0 lead on Alex Crosby's run scoring single up the middle that drove in Daniel Caresio in the top of the first inning.
 
The Gators tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second when Garrett Heisinger on a ground out by Fernando Escobar.  Heisinger reached on a one-out walk.  He went to second on a walk to Joe Chedid.  Still with one out, Danny Souza was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Escobar then drove in Heisinger on a fielder's choice.
 
The Seawolves came back in their half of the third as they scored five runs keyed by a bases clearing one-out triple by Eric Ehlow.  Sonoma State had just three hits in the inning with one error.
 
SF State scored one run in the fourth on Carter Loud single up to center field that drove in Nick Jackson, who reached on a two-out single to left field. 
 
The Gators pulled within one run in the fifth inning.  Mark Lindsay had a lead-off single and went to second on a two-out single by Danny Souza.  Escobar reached on an error which brought in Lindsay.  Still with two outs, Nick Jackson hit a run scoring single to left field that brought in Souza.  Carter Loud hit the second pitch he saw for a run scoring single that scored Escobar to make the score Sonoma State 6-5.
 
The score remained that until the top of the seventh when the Seawolves scored two important insurance runs to take an 8-5 lead.
 
The Gators rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning, but they fell short.  Trevor Diskin reached base with one out on a hit batsman.  He went to second on a single up the middle by Jackson.  Diskin scored on a single by Loud to make the score, 8-6 Seawolves.  Grady Espinosa loaded the bases with an infield single.  Jackson put the Gators within one run as he scored on a wild pitch.  Wes Carswell was intentionally walked to load the bases.  Aaron Gillis preserve the Seawolf win as he induced the next Gator to ground out to a game ending double play.  This was Gillis' first save of the season.
 
Devon Alexander (1-2) recorded the win in relief, pitching three innings of relief, giving up six hits and three unearned runs while striking out three and walking one.
 
Ryan Bohnet (2-2) picked up the loss in the start for the Gators.
 
Ehlow had two of Sonoma State's 7 hits with three RBIs. 
 
Jackson finished the game going 4-for-4, scoring twice and driving in a run.  Carter Loud had three runs batted in with three hits while Espinosa also had three hits for the Gators, who finished with 14 on the day.
 
In the opener, the Seawolves scored 13 runs on 24 hits with five players with three hits apiece in Daniel Caresio, Garrett Schwartz, Dallas Seidel, Justin Serrao and Wesley Wallace. 
 
Jon Richards picked up the win for Sonoma State, pitching 6.1 innings, giving up 7 hits and four runs while striking out three and walking one. 
 
Jack Veronin fell to 2-1 as he recorded the loss for SF State, who falls to 12-13 overall and 7-8 in the CCAA.
 
Joe Chedid had two hits in the opener and scored twice.  Danny Souza drove in two of the Gators' four runs. 
 
The two teams will finish of the four-game weekend series tomorrow morning with a single nine-inning game that will begin at 11am at Seawolf Field in Rohnert Park.
