Walk-Off Keys #8 Chico State Sweep of Gators

CHICO---  The eighth ranked Chico State Wildcats (24-5, 16-4 CCAA) rallied back from a 3-1 deficit in the final game of this weekend's four-game series to defeat the visiting SF State Gators 4-3 in eighth innings and sweep today's doubleheader.  Blake Walker hit a two-out walk-off single up the middle to drive in Ryne Clark with the game-winning run.
 
SF State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning in the night cap as Carter Loud scored on a balk.  Loud lead off the inning reaching base on a hit batsman.  He went to third on a single to left field by Trevor Diskin and scored on a balk. 
 
The Wildcats tied the game in their half of the fourth inning when Jeffrey Ortega reached base on a Gator error which brought in Ryan McClellan with the tying run.
 
The Gators took the lead in their half of the fifth when Grady Espinosa scored on a wild pitch.  He reached bases on a two-out single and went to second on a single by Mark Lindsay.  Loud singled to right field to load the bases with two outs.  Espinosa scored on a wild pitch to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.
 
With one out in the Gator sixth, Joe Chedid walked.  He advanced to second on a balk.  Nick Jackson drove in Chedid on a single to center field to increase the Gator lead to 3-1.
 
Chico State tied the game with a two-run seventh inning.  Dylan Garcia walked to lead o the inning.  He went to second on a single by Ruben Padilla. Both Wildcat runners moved up a base on a sacrifice by pinch hitter Kenny Corona.  With one out, McClellan drove in Walker to move the hosts within a run.
 
The next Wildcat batter flied out to right field.  Then with two outs, Padilla scored the tying run on a wild pitch to send the game into extra innings.
 
SF State (12-18, 7-13 CCAA) had a chance to take in the lead in the top of the eighth.  Matt Vera hit a one-out double down the left field line.  Luke Barker (2-0) induced the next two Gator batters to line and strike out to preserve the 3-3 tie.
 
In the Chico eighth, Clark walked with one out and stole his eighth base.  Clark scored on a single up the middle by Clark to give the Wildcats the 4-3 win.
 
Cory Davis (2-2) recorded the loss, pitching 2.2 innings, giving up four hits and three runs. 
 
Jack Veronin recorded the no-decision in the start, pitching 4.1 innings, giving up 6 hits and one run. 
 
Barker went one scoreless inning and gave up just one hit while striking out one in the win.
 
Trevor Diskin had three of the Gators' 9 hits while Lindsay had two.
 
Four Wildcat batters had two hits each.
 
In the opener, Nolan Sheridan (2-5) recorded the loss.  The sophomore right-handed pitcher pitched 6.2 innings, giving up 6 hits and three runs (one earned), striking out one and walking one. 

Marcos (6-1) picked up the win for the Wildcats, pitching 8 scoreless innings of five-hit ball, striking out five and walking one.  Barker recorded his 10th save, pitching the final inning, giving up two hits and one unearned run while striking out one.
 
The Wildcats scored the only run they needed in the third inning. 
 
Cody Slader had a two-out single.  Slader then stole third and went to third on the errant throw.  He scored on an infield single by Clark to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
 
Chico State added two more runs in the seventh inning to take a 3-0 lead in the final two innings.
 
The Gators made it interesting in their half of the ninth inning.  Wes Carswell reached on fielding error to lead off the inning for the guests.  He went to second on a single up the middle by Espinosa.  With one out, Carter Loud loaded the bases with a single left field.  Carswell scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by pinch-hitter Bryce Cherry.  With two outs and runners on first and second, Barker induced the Gator to ground out to preserve the 3-1 victory.
 
Lindsay and Danny Souza each had two hits to lead the Gator hitting attack.
 
SF State will continue its season long road trip with a four-game series this weekend, April 4-6 at No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona in Pomona, Calif.  The series will start with a single nine-inning game this Friday at 3pm.  It will continue with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.  The four-game series will end a week from today with a single game at 11am.
