Gators Rally In Game One, Split with Otters

SEASIDE, Calif.—  The visiting SF State Gators scored four runs in the top of the ninth in game one of this afternoon's doubleheader to defeat the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters, 6-4,  Mark Lindsay hit a two-out two-run single up the middle to give the visitors the lead.  Cal State Monterey Bay's Jeff Owen through a three-hit complete game shutout in game two as the Otters split with the doubleheader with the Gators, 4-0.

Cal State Monterey Bay put a three spot on the board in the bottom of the fourth keyed by Cannon Bernarding's double to left field. 

SF State cut the Otter lead to 3-2 with a two-run sixth inning.  Grady Espinosa had a lead-off double, and then Mark Lindsay walked.  They advanced a base on a sacrifice by Carter Loud.  With the count 1-1, Garrett Heisinger hit a double down the left field line to drive in Espinosa and Lindsay.

The Otters took a 4-2 lead on a Blake Grant-Parks single in the seventh that drove in Richie Johnson.

Bryce Cherry reached on an error by the Otters with one out in the bottom of the ninth to start the Gators' rally.  Fernando Escobar pinch ran for him and went to second when Matt Vera was hit by a pitch.  With two outs, pinch-hitter Trevor Diskin also was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Espinosa hit the first pitch he saw to the Otters' infield, but they misplayed and both Escobar and Vera came into score to tie the game at 4-4. 

Still with two outs and runners on second on third, Lindsay hit the second pitch he saw for a two-run single up the middle that drove in Diskin and Espinosa.

Cory Davis came in in the bottom of the ninth for the Gators and gave up just one hit to record his seventh save of the season.  Taylor Wade (2-0) recorded the win in relief for the Gators pitching a scoreless eighth inning. 

Espinosa had two of the Gators' five hits in the game. 

Christian Stubbs (1-1) recorded the loss for the Otters in relief.

In the night cap, Owen pitched a complete game three-hit shutout striking out six and walking one batter.  Owen improved to 4-1 on the season. 

SF State (12-9, 7-4 CCAA) had a chance to score in its half of the fourth inning.  Dillon Meyer had a lead-off infield single and went to third on a sacrifice by Vera.  Meyer went to third on a wild pitch with one and was stranded there.

Cal State Monterey Bay (8-14, 5-10 CCAA) scored the only runs that Owen needed in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Johnson one-out triple that brought in Mark Hurley,   Johnson scored on a two-out single by Grant-Parks. 

The Otters added two more insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 4-0 lead.

Ryan Bohnet (2-1) recorded the loss for SF State, pitching 5.2 innings, giving up four runs and nine hits while striking out four and walking four.

The two teams will finish off the four-game series tomorrow at noon with a single nine-inning game at SF State.
