Box Score SAN FRANCISCO – The visiting Cal State Monterey Bay Otters behind the pitching duo of AJ Quintero and Travis Bonner defeated the SF State Gators 2-1 in this afternoon's weekend series finale between the two teams. Quintero (1-2) pitched 8 innings, giving up six hits and one unearned run while striking out 8 batters. Bonner recorded his second save by pitching a scoreless ninth.
The Otters (9-14, 6-10 CCAA) scored first in the top of the first inning. Josh Heinz walked with one out. He went to second on an on single through the left side by Mark Hurley. Richie Johnson had a single to left field to load the bases with one out. Heinz scored on a sacrifice fly by Bonner.
The score remained 1-0 Otters until their half of the fifth inning. Shawn Wheeler walked with two outs and went to second on an infield single by Brian Hamm. Wheeler scored on a two-out single by Heinz to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
SF State (12-10, 7-5 CCAA) cut the Otter lead in half in its half of the fifth inning.
Garrett Heisinger, who finished 2-for-4, singled to left field with one out. He advanced to second when
Trevor Diskin reached on an error by the Otters.
Danny Souza reached base on a bunt to load the bases with just one out. Heisinger scored on a wild pitch to cut the visitors' lead to 2-1. Quintero struck out the next Gator batter and induced the final out on a ground out.
The Gators looked like they would to tie the game in the eighth inning.
Matt Vera and
Grady Espinosa had back to back singles with two outs, but Quintero induced the final out on a line out to second base.
With one out in the ninth, Heisinger singled to center field which
Nick Jackson came in to pinch run for him. Jackson stole second base with two outs, Bonner (who came on in relief) struck out the final Gator batter to preserve the 2-1 Otter win.
Nolan Sheridan (2-4) recorded the loss for SF State, pitching 7 innings of five hit ball, striking out two, walking three and giving up two runs.
Cory Davis struck out two batters en route to two scoreless innings of relief.
Besides Heisinger's two hits, Diskin also had two of the Gators' seven hits.
The Gators will return to the diamond on Friday, March 21 when they travel to Rohnert Park, Calif.,for the beginning of a four-game home-away conference series. First pitch for the single game is scheduled for 2pm at Seawolf Diamond. The series will then move to SF State, for a noon starting doubleheader on Saturday, March 22. The four-game series will conclude on Sunday, March 23 for a scheduled 12pm starting game.
