Box Score 2 SAN FRANCISCO--- The SF State Gators swept this afternoon's doubleheader 4-3 (11) and 11-6 from the visiting Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles to take a 3-0 series advantage. The two teams will conclude the four-game series tomorrow morning with an 11am starting nine-inning game at The Swamp at Maloney Field.
The Gators took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning of game one.
Carter Loud had a lead-off single and went to second on a one-out single by
Mark Lindsay.
Garrett Heisinger walked to load the bases. Vera then drove in Loud with a sacrifice fly. Lindsay came in to score on a two-out single to left field by
Danny Souza to give the Gators a 2-0 lead.
They added another run in the fifth inning on a one-out single to left field by
Grady Espinosa that scored
Dillon Meyer, who reached base on a single to left field.
Gator starter,
Jack Veronin, held the Golden Eagles scoreless until the top of the eighth inning. Casey Ryan singled with one out. He went to second on a wild pitch on a run scoring single by Drew Vanisi.
Cal State L.A. (14-22, 12-18 CCAA) tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the ninth inning. David Trejo and Matt Sanchez had back to back singles to lead off the inning. Kevin Fontana came in to pinch run for Trejo.
Cory Davis came on relief of Veronin with no one out and runners on first and second. Sanchez and Fontana advanced a base on a sacrifice by Josh Guerra. With one out, Sanchez scored on a ground out to second by Jesus Cuevas. With two outs and a runner on third base, Manny Acosta hit the fourth pitch he saw for a single to left field to tie the game at 3-3.
The score remained tied at 3-3 until the Gator half of the eleventh.
Nick Jackson had a lead-off walk and went to second on a sacrifice by Loud. Espinosa was intentionally walked with one out. Lindsay singled to load the bases.
Garrett Heisinger then hit into a fielder's choice as Jackson was out at home. Then with two outs and the bases loaded and the count 2-2, Vera hit the fifth pitch he saw for a single to right field to drive in Espinosa with the game-winning run.
The Gators had 13 hits in game one with Loud leading the way going three-for-five. Lindsay, Vera and Souza each had two hits apiece.
The Golden Eagles had 11 hits with three different players with two hits apiece in Manny Acosta, Casey Ryan and David Trejo.
Reed Reznicek (4-1) recorded the loss in relief for the visitors pitching 2.2 innings, giving up three hits and one run, walking five and striking out three. Greg Humbert had the no decision for Cal State L.A., pitching 8 innings, giving up 10 hits and three runs, striking out 6 and walking two.
Cory Davis (3-2) picked up the win for the Gators, as he pitched three innings of relief, giving up one hit, walking one and striking out three.
Veronin had the no decision, giving up 10 hits and three runs while striking out four in eight innings of work.
Cal State L.A. took a 1-0 lead in the night cap on two-out single by Kyle Peralta that brought in Ryan with the game's first run.
SF State (16-21, 11-16 CCAA) scored two runs in it half of the second to take a 2-1 lead.
Espinosa had a one-out double and scored when Heisinger reached on a fielding error by the Golden Eagles. Heisinger scored on a double by Vera to give the Gators a 2-1 advantage.
Cody Doyle's solo home run to right center tied the game at 2-2 in the Golden Eagle half of the third.
SF State came right back with a four-run third to take a 6-2 lead. Jackson had a lead-off bunt single, went to second on a ground out by
Wes Carswell. Then with two outs,
Bryce Cherry drove in Jackson with a single up the middle. Espinosa reached on a fielding error to put runners on first and second. Heisinger hit a single to right field to bring in Cherry. Espinosa and Heisinger scored on a two-run two-out error by Cal State L.A. to give the Gators a 6-2 advantage.
Cal State L.A. would not go away as the guests scored four runs of their own in the top of the fourth inning capped by a Vanisi one-out single to bring in Ryan with the tying run.
SF State retook the lead for good with a two-run fourth inning. Escobar had a lead-off single and went to second on a ground out by Jackson. With two outs, Cherry walked to load the bases for Espinosa. The senior outfielder drove in both runners with a single to left field to give the Gators an 8-6 lead.
The Gators added three runs in the fifth to take a commanding 11-6 lead heading into the final two innings.
Espinosa and Heisinger each had two hits for the hosts as the Gators had 10 hits in game two.
Vanisi led the Golden Eagle hitting attack with three hits.
Jordan Cavazos recorded the loss for the Golden Eagles, pitching 3.2 innings, giving up 6 hits, 8 runs (three earned), striking out one and walking one.
Preston Tarter improved to 3-5 with the win while
Joe Chedid recorded his first collegiate save. Chedid pitched three innings of one-hit relief, while striking out two and walking one.
