Box Score SAN FRANCISCO--- For the second straight day and the second time in the four game series,
Matt Vera either scored or drove in the game-winning run. This afternoon, Vera had a lead-off double to left center in the bottom of the ninth and scored the game-winner when
Wes Carswell's sacrifice bunt that the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles threw away to give SF State the 5-4 win and the series sweep over their opponents.
Taylor Wade picked up the win in relief as he pitched two scoreless innings, giving up two hits; walking three and striking out en route to him improve to 3-0 on the season.
Nolan Sheridan had the no decision as he pitched 7 innings, giving up 6 hits and four runs, striking out four and walking two.
Cal State L.A. (14-23, 12-19 CCAA) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Many Acosta walked to lead off the game. He went to third on a one-out single through the right side by Cody Doyle. Acosta scored when Drew Vanisi reached first on a fielder's choice.
The Golden Eagles doubled their score in the second as David Trejo had a lead-off walk. He went to third on a single by Jesus Cuevas. Trejo scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Josh Guerra to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
SF State tied the game with a two-run seventh inning.
Grady Espinosa had a lead-off walk and went to second on a ground out by
Mark Lindsay. With two outs,
Matt Vera was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Pinch-hitter
Bryce Cherry hit the first pitch he saw off of reliever, David Armas, for a two-out double to right field to drive in Espinosa and Vera to tie the game at 2-2.
The Golden Eagles retook the lead in their half of the eighth inning. Acosta and Ryan had back to back singles to lead off the frame. Doyle then hit the sixth pitch he saw for a single to right field to bring in Acosta. The Gators brought in Wade to relieve Sheridan with no outs and runners on the corners.
Vanisi hit a double down the left field line to give the Golden Eagles a 4-2 lead as Ryan scored on the play. Kyle Peralta walked to load the bases, but Wade induced the next batter to ground into a 1-2-3 double play. Then with two outs, Wade intentionally walked Cuevas but he induced the next Golden Eagle to fly out to
Nick Jackson in left field.
SF State rallied once again in its frame of the eighth.
Dillon Meyer had a lead-off single, but was out as Jackson reached on a fielder's choice. Jackson advanced to third on a double down the left field line by
Carter Loud. The redshirt freshman scored on Espinosa's sacrifice fly to right field. Then with two outs and a runner on second, Lindsay he the third pitch he saw for a single to right center to bring in Loud with the tying run.
Wade walked the first batter he saw in the top of the ninth in Andrew Montanari. Wade then had the next batter pop out to second and struck out the next Golden Eagle for two outs. Doyle singled with two outs to put runners on first and second, but Vanisi lined out to Loud in right field to end the inning.
Vera had a lead-off double and scored on Carswell's sacrifice bunt to give the Gators the 5-4 win.
The Gators (17-21, 12-16 CCAA) had eight hits on the day with Loud and Vera each with two.
David Armas (1-4) had the loss in relief for the Golden Eagles while Doyle had three of their eight hits.
SF State will continue its eight-game home stand with a four-game series against No. 24 UC San Diego. The two teams will start their series this Thursday, April 17 with a single nine-inning game at 3pm at The Swamp at Maloney Field.
