Softball Travels South For Four Game Series Against The Coyotes

Selina Rodriguez has been on a tear for the Gators, she looks to remain hot at the plate as SF State takes on Cal State San Bernardino for a four-game series starting Friday.
San Francisco – The SF State softball team, fresh of a series split with No. 15 UC San Diego and winners of seven of their last 12 games, take their current hot streak South to play Cal State San Bernardino for a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series at Coyotes Softball Park starting Friday, April 18 at 1 p.m.

The Gators enter this week's contest with an overall record of 17-30 and are 8-20 in the CCAA.  However, over their last 12 games, dating back to the Tournament of Champions the Gators are 7-5 which includes three wins over top-25 teams.

Last weekend, the Gators split with No. 15 UC San Diego who, previously, had split just one other series all season.  The series was dominated by tremendous pitching and spectacular defense.  Freshman Megan Clark had a dominating pair of starts, going 2-0 with a 1.57 ERA against the Tritons.  The lefty opened the series throwing a two-hit complete game shutout, she backed that up throwing a gritty 13 inning complete game, holding the Tritons scoreless for the final 12 innings as the Gators won it in the bottom of the 13th.

Clark leads the team with an 8-11 mark her 2.94 ERA is bested only by Aryn Guzman's 2.62 ERA.  Clark ranks sixth in the conference in complete games with 14, her 128.2 innings pitched is eighth in the CCAA.  As a team, SF State has lowered its staff ERA to an impressive 3.48 which ranks fifth in the conference.  Jenny Obbema picked up her first career save, preserving the second career-win for Courtney Dunkel against Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday.

Defensively, the Gators glove work was on full display last week, specifically the play by Lucy Fernandez at third and by Gabby Reta and Guzman in the corner outfield spots.  All three made several highlight reel plays and showed why the Gators are 64th in the nation in fielding percentage.

At the plate the Gators sport a team batting average of .257, and average 3.09 runs per game.  Leading the team at the dish is junior shortstop Courtney Gravel who is hitting .366, her 56 hits is tied for sixth most in the conference and is a new career-high, she now has 143 hits which is threatening to crack the all-time list.

The Coyotes enter this weekend with an overall record of 25-21 and are 12-16 in the CCAA which puts them seventh in the standings.  They are currently mired in a four-game losing streak after being swept on the road by Cal State East Bay.

As a team, CSUSB is hitting .322, and average 5.26 runs per game.  Leading the team at the plate is junior infielder Nicole Nobbe who is hitting an astounding .486 which is tops in the CCAA.  Junior catcher Tiffany McIntosh is second in the conference with 13 home runs, and leads the team with 40 runs batted in.

In the circle, the Coyotes sport a staff ERA of 3.52, in 300.1 innings pitched they have allowed 221 runs, with 353 hits, 98 walks and 166 strike outs, opponents are hitting .293 against them.  Leading the team with 13 wins is Cassandra Williams, who sports an ERA of 2.78, in 15 starts she has thrown nine complete games and two shutouts; she also leads the team with four saves.
