San Francisco – The SF State softball team will play its final series of the 2014 season this weekend, hosting Sonoma State for a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series starting Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the SF State softball field. The series will be the final games of two outstanding senior athletes, as
Kylie Grabowski and
Kelsey Murakami will be honored on Senior Day on Saturday.
The Gators enter this weekend's contest with an overall record of 17-34 and are 8-24 in the CCAA. Last weekend SF State had a rough go in their final road trip of the season, falling to Cal State San Bernardino in all four contests. The Gators have lost six of their last eight. However, at the friendly confines the Gators have gone 3-3 in their last six, which includes a series split against No. 15 UC San Diego.
As a team, the Gators are hitting .250, averaging 2.74 runs per game. Leading the team is junior shortstop
Courtney Gravel who is hitting .366 which is tied for 13
th in the CCAA, her 60 hits is tied for sixth in the conference it also moves her into 11
th most in a single-season at SF State, she is four shy of tying the mark set by Vanessa Rodrigue set in 2006.
Sophomore outfielder
Jennifer Lewis is on fire right now, she finished last weekend going 5-for-11 with a pair of runs scored and a run driven in. In CCAA action she is hitting .355, and leads the team with 14 RBIs. For the year, Lewis is batting .336 with a team leading 25 runs driven in. She also boasts a team-high nine doubles.
In the circle the Gators staff sports an ERA of 3.78 which ranks seventh in the CCAA, helping aid the Gators success on the rubber is fact that SF State's pitchers have combined to issue just 101 walks, which is third fewest in the CCAA.
Megan Clark leads the Gators with a 3.01 ERA, in 25 appearances, including a team-high 22 starts she has posted an 8-12 mark. She has 14 complete games this season, including four shutouts. Clark is currently ranked seventh in the conference in complete games, 10
th in strike outs with 65, 11
th in innings pitched and ERA. In her last 10 appearances in conference play she has allowed two runs or less in ever appearance.
Sonoma State enters this weekend's contest with an overall record of 33-17 and is 17-15 in the CCAA. They are currently receiving votes in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll. As a team, they are hitting .316 which ranks second in the CCAA. The Seawolves like to run, as they have stolen 111 bases on the year, three players have 20 or more stolen bags in 2014.
Leading the team at the dish is senior outfielder Megan Konieczka, who is hitting .436 which ranks third in the conference. She has 72 hits, 29 of which have gone for extra bases, including 14 that have left the yard; she is also 21-for-23 in stolen base attempts this season.
In the circle, SSU boasts a staff ERA of 2.45 which is second in the CCAA. Leading the team is sophomore pitcher Amanda Llerena who is 20-10 with a 1.83 ERA. In 195.0 innings pitched she has surrendered 170 hits, 51 earned runs, and boasts an impressive 175 strike outs to just 49 walks. Senior lefty Katy Bihl is tops in the conference with seven saves on the year.
Friday's contest will be the Gators annual salute to the military. Between games one and two there will be a ball toss, with all proceeds going to the Wounded Warriors Project.
On Saturday the Gators will say their goodbyes to two student athletes making their final appearance in the purple and gold. Seniors
Kylie Grabowski and Kelsie Murakami will be playing their final contests as members of the Gators softball team. There will be a pre-game ceremony to honor the two seniors.
