Nick Jackson drove in
Dillon Meyer with a two-out single up the middle in the top of the 12
th with the game-winning run in the SF State Gators' 10-9 win over the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros this afternoon at the Toro Baseball Field in Carson, Calif. This was the Gators third straight series opening victory while improving to 5-2 in extra-inning games.
The Gators now have won 7 of their last 10 games and are now 2.5 games out of fifth place in the CCAA. Cal State East Bay is in fifth place and had its game this afternoon with Cal State L.A. postponed due to the rain in the Bay Area.
Cory Davis (4-2) recorded the win in relief for the Gators, pitching three innings, giving up 7 hits and three runs while walking two.
Joe Chedid pitched a scoreless 12
th to record his second save of the season. Chedid struck out one batter and walked one in the twelfth.
Nick Wagner (0-3) recorded the loss for the Toros in relief, pitching three innings, giving up two hits and a run while striking out four.
SF State (20-23, 15-18 CCAA) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as
Dillon Meyer had a lead-off walk. He scored on
Bryce Cherry's run scoring double to right center.
Carter Loud had an infield single which Cherry went to third. Cherry scored on a single to right field by
Grady Espinosa.
Cal State Dominguez Hills tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run third inning keyed by a two-run single by Bubby Rossman. The Toros took a 3-2 lead on a Danny Haley's sacrifice fly that scored Jordan Yallen in the fourth. Yallen lead off the Toro fourth with a single and came in to score on the sacrifice fly.
The hosts added another run on an Alex Sixtos' sacrifice fly to center field that drove in Peter Ives to give the Toros a 4-2 lead.
SF State cut the Toro lead in half in its half of the sixth inning. Espinosa had a lead-off single and went to second on an errant throw. He went to third on a single by
Mark Lindsay. The senior outfielder scored on a
Garrett Heisinger single up the middle to make it 4-3 Toros.
The Gators retook the lead with a three-run seventh as Cherry had a one-out double down the left field line. He advanced to third on a passed ball with two outs. Cherry scored on an infield single by Espinosa. Espinosa advanced to second on a passed ball which he then stole third. Lindsay drove in Espinosa to give the Gators a 5-4 lead. The junior catcher advanced to second on a wild pitch. He then went to third when Heisinger reached on a Toro error.
Matt Vera drove in Lindsay with the innings' third run to give SF State a 6-4 lead.
SF State took an 8-4 lead with a two-run eighth.
Fernando Escobar reached on a two-base throwing error by the Toros. He scored when Meyer reached second on another two base error, this time off a sacrifice bunt. Meyer scored on a
Will Hein single to center field to give the guests an 8-4 lead.
Cal State Dominguez Hills would not go away as the Toros cut the Gator lead to 9-6 with a two-run eighth inning. Jack Collick had a one-out two-run pinch hit double down the right field line which scored Yallen and David Steininger.
SF State added another run in the ninth inning when Chedid scored on a fielder's choice by Cherry after reaching base on a one-out walk to increase the Gators' lead to 9-6.
Ives had a lead-off single and scored on a two-run home run by Rossman to cut the visitors' lead to 9-8 in the Toro ninth. With two outs, Yallen walked and went to third on a double by Steininger. He scored on a two-out single by Adrian Guzman. With runners on the corners and two outs, Davis induced the next Toro to pop up to Chedid at second and keep the score at 9-9.
The Toros (18-23, 13-20) had a chance to win the game in their half of the eleventh. Sixtos had a lead-off single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Yallen. Steininger was intentionally walked. Davis induced the next batter to ground out to a 6-4-3 double play.
In the Gators twelfth, Meyer had a lead-off single and stole his second base of the day and 13
th of the season. Then with two outs and the count 2-2, Jackson singled up Meyer with what proved to be the game-winner.
Chedid then came in the bottom of the frame. He got the first out on a ground out and retired the next Toro on a fly out to Meyer in center field. Chedid walked the next batter, but induced the final out on an eight-pitch strike out looking for his second save of the season.
The Gators had six pitchers in today's game including Davis and Chedid.
Tyler Cobb came in and pitched two scoreless innings of one-hit relief while striking out one.
The Toros had 16 hits on the day including four by Peter Ives. Rossman drove in four of their nine runs with three hits.
SF State had 17 hits on the day with Meyer and Espinosa each going 3-for-5. Meyer scored three runs and Espinosa drove in two runs and scored twice. Also with multiple hit games were Cherry, Lindsay, Heisinger and Vera.
The two teams will continue the four-game series tomorrow at noon with a doubleheader at Toro Baseball Field. The series will conclude this Sunday, April 27 at 11am with a single nine-inning game at Toro Baseball Field.
