Gators Take Game Two 1-0 Behind Duo of Tarter, Davis to Split DH With #10 CPP

POMONA, Calif.—  The SF State pitching duo of Preston Tarter and Cory Davis gave up just four hits as the Gators defeated the No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos 1-0 to secure a split in this afternoon's doubleheader at Scolinos Field in Pomona, Calif.  With the win, Tarter picks up his second win of the season while Davis recorded his 8th save of the season.
 
SF State (13-20, 8-15 CCAA) scored the only run it needed in the top of the fifth inning.  Freshman catcher Dalton Pizzuti, in his first start as a Gator, had a lead-off single down the left field line.  He advanced to second on an error.  Danny Souza walked to put runners on first and second.  Nick Jackson reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and second.
 
With one out, Dillon Meyer singled to load the bases.  Then Souza scored on a fielder's choice by Carter Loud to give the Gators a 1-0 lead. 
 
The Broncos had a chance to tie the game in its half of the sixth of the seven inning game.  David Armendariz had a one-out walk.  He stole second still with one out.  Chris Carlson walked to put runners on first and second.  Cory Davis then came in to reliever Tarter.  Joe Eusebio singled through the left side on the second pitch he saw which Armendariz tried to score on but the Gators' Carter Loud threw him out on a perfect throw to Pizzutti.
 
Davis shut the Broncos down 1, 2, and 3 in the seventh to preserve the 1-0 victory.
 
Tarter (2-5) pitched 5.1 innings of three-hit ball, walking three and striking out two.  Davis pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief giving up just one hit en route to his ninth save.
 
Meyer and Pizzuti each had two hits to lead the Gators' hitters. 
 
Four different Broncos had a hit apiece.  Cory Pence recorded the loss for the hosts.

In this afternoon's first game, the tenth ranked Broncos defeated the Gators behind the pitching trio of Max Bethell, Austin Boyle and JJ Franklin.  Bothell (7-2) picked up the win in the start, pitching 7 innings of 7 hit ball while striking out three, walking one and giving up two runs (one earned).  Boyle pitched a scoreless eighth while Franklin recorded his 6th save by pitching a scoreless ninth.
 
Jack Veronin (2-2) recorded the loss, pitching 6.1 innings, giving up six hits and three runs (one earned) while striking out one and walking one.  Tarter pitched the final 1.2 innings of relief, giving up one hit.
 
The Broncos (23-8, 16-7 CCAA) took a 2-0 lead in their half of the second inning.  Joseph Eusebio had a lead-off single, stole second and went to third on wild pitch.  Eusebio scored when Nick Cooksey reached on an error.  Cooksey scored on a single by Steven Andrade.
 
SF State cut the lead in half in its half of the third.  Garrett Heisinger and Matt Vera had back to back singles to lead off the third.  They advanced a base on a sacrifice by Danny Souza.  Meyer, who finished game one four-for-four, walked to load the bases.  Heisinger scored on a fielder's choice by Joe Chedid.  Loud had a bunt single to load the bases, but Bethell induced the next Gator to ground out to end the inning.
 
SF State tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the fifth.  Souza reached on an error to start the fifth.  He went to second on an infield single by Meyer.  They advanced to second and third on a sacrifice by Chedid.  Loud then drove in Souza with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2.
 
The score remained tied until the Bronco seventh.  Jason Padlo had a lead-off double.  He went to second on a sacrifice by Andrade.  He scored on a pinch hit single by Mike Philp to give the Broncos the 3-2 lead.
 
SF State had a chance to tie the game in its half of the ninth.  With two outs, Nick Jackson walked and went to second on a single by Meyer but Franklin struck out the final Gator to preserve the 3-2 Bronco win.
 
Seven different Broncos had one hit apiece while Meyer had four of the Gators' nine hits.  Junior first baseman Garrett Heisinger finished with two hits for the visitors.
 
The two teams will finish off the four-game series as the Gators will look for the series split tomorrow morning at 11am with a single nine-inning game at Scolinos Field in Pomona.
