Behind the Pitching Duo of Becker and O'Bryan, Cal State East Bay Sweeps Gators

HAYWARD---  Behind the pitching duo of Sean Becker and Ben O'Bryan, the Cal State East Bay Pioneers swept this afternoon's conference doubleheader from the visiting SF State Gators 4-1 and 8-2 to improve to 30-17 overall and 24-15 in the CCAA.  Both Becker and O'Bryan pitched complete game victories while giving up a combined 7 hits and three runs (one earned) in the Pioneers' two wins.
 
Game one started as a pitching duel between the Gators' Preston Tarter and the Pioneers' Sean Becker as each pitcher allowed just one run in the first seven innings.
 
SF State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.  Carter Loud had a lead-off bunt single.  He then stole second, went to third on a ground out by Grady EspinosaMark Lindsay drove in Loud on a ground out to short stop to give the Gators a 1-0 lead.
 
The Pioneers tied the game in their half of the fourth inning.  Ryan Kochan had a one-out single up the middle and went to third on a double by Daniel Carney.  Kochan scored on a pop out by Chris Porter to tie the game at 1-1.
 
SF State had a chance to take the lead in its frame of the eighth.  Dillon Meyer was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.  He stole second with one out.  Loud then was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out.  Becker then induced the Gator to ground out in an inning double play to keep the score tied at 1-1.
 
Cal State East Bay, who is ranked sixth in this week's NCAA Division II West Region rankings, had its first two batters in the bottom of the eighth reach base.  Kelly Starnes walked and then Marcus Wise was hit by a pitch.  They advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Jason Fletcher.  Brandon Alexander was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out.  Kochan then hit the fifth pitch he saw for a double to left field to bring in Starnes and Wise to give the Pioneers a 3-1 lead.  The hosts added an insurance run on a two-out single to center field by Carney to give Cal State East Bay a 4-1 lead.
 
Matt Vera had a two-out single to left center in the Gator half of the ninth inning, but Becker induced the final batter to foul out to third to preserve the 4-1 victory for
Cal State East Bay.
 
Becker (7-4) picked up the complete game win, pitching 9 innings of five hit ball.  He gave up five hits and one run while striking out one.  Kochan and Carney did all the damage for the Pioneers, going a combine 5-for-7 with three runs batted in and scoring two runs.
 
Tarter (4-7) recorded the loss for SF State, pitching 8 innings, giving up five hits and four runs, striking out four and walking five.
 
Loud and Vera each had two hits apiece for the Gators' offense.
 
In the night cap, the Pioneers took a 6-0 lead after the first three innings.  Starnes and Ellis Stephney had back to back lead-off singles.  Starnes scored when Fletcher reached on a Gator error.  Stephney and Fletcher each advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Alexander.  Kochan singled home Stepheny for the inning's second run.  Fletcher scored on a sacrifice fly by Carney to give the hosts a 3-0 lead.
 
Cal State East Bay added two more runs in the second capped by back to back run scoring doubles by Starnes and Stephney to increase its lead to 5-0.  The Pioneers added an insurance run in the third to take a 6-0 lead.
 
SF State (21-27, 16-22) got on the board in its half of the fourth inning.  Meyer walked and stole second, his 15th of the season and 33rd of his two-year career, to tie Chris Sorenson'91 for tenth on the Gators' career list in stolen bases.  Vera walked to put runners on first and second with no one out.  Loud then hit the second pitch he saw for a run scoring single to left center which brought in Meyer to cut the Pioneer lead to 6-1.  O'Bryan then retired the next three batters to keep the score at 6-1 Pioneers.
 
The Gators scored again in their half of the sixth inning.  Meyer had a lead-off double and went third on a ground out by Loud.  With two outs, Espinosa walked to put runners on the corner.  Espinosa went to second on a passed ball. Meyer then scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 6-2.
 
Cal State East Bay added two more runs in the sixth to take an 8-2 lead heading into the seventh.  In the seventh, O'Bryan (5-4) retired the Gators 1, 2, 3 to preserve the 8-2 Pioneer win. 
 
O'Bryan pitched a complete game, pitching 7 innings, giving up just two hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out 8 and walking three.  The top of the order paced the Pioneers in Starnes and Stephney as they went a combined 6-for-8 driving in three runs and scoring four runs.
 
Nolan Sheridan (2-9) recorded the loss, pitching 5.2 innings, giving up 11 hits and 8 runs (five earned), striking out two and walking two.  Tyler Cobb pitched the final 0.1 innings for SF State. 
 
Meyer and Loud each had the Gators two hits with Meyer scoring twice and Loud driving in a run.

The two teams will end their regular season tomorrow at noon with a single game at The Swamp at Maloney Field on SF State's campus.  Prior to the game at 11:45 am, the Gators will recognize their seniors in Trevor Diskin, Grady Espinosa, Carter Loud, Dillon Meyer, Jack Veronin and Taylor Wade in their Senior Day Ceremony.
