@SFState_WVB Sweeps Toros In Road Win To Begin Conference Play

The Gators used a balanced attack as five players recorded eight or more kills in the straight-sets sweep over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday evening.
Box Score Carson – The SF State volleyball team entered Friday's match riding a 12-match winning streak against Cal State Dominguez Hills, a streak that dates back to 2008.  The Gators extended that streak tonight with a straight-sets win on the road over the Toros, 25-19, 25-22, 27-25 at the Torodome to begin CCAA action.

The Gators (3-3/1-0 CCAA) took advantage of 25 Toro errors, while limiting their own mistakes.  SF State hit .297 on the evening and had five players record eight or more kills in a very balanced attack.  Junior Bria Morgan led the Gators with 11 kills on the evening, Kaileen Mejia followed suit with another outstanding evening, tallying nine kills on 15 swings with no errors for a .600 attack percentage.

Jaclyn Clark also added nine kills, while seniors Melissa Horton and Jazmine Williams both added eight.  Senior setter Jacquie Brice tallied 39 assists with six digs and an ace on the evening.  Libero Jessica Nicerio continued her steady play with a match-high 15 digs.  With the loss Cal State Dominguez Hills falls to 1-4/0-1 CCAA.

"Any road win in the CCAA is tough to get and especially in three sets," said head coach Jill Muhe.  "Really happy with the adjustments that we made throughout the match and that we were able to get this win on the road in three."

In the opening set the Toros jumped out to the early 4-1 lead.  The Gators rallied back and eventually tied the set at eight apiece following the first of several CSUDH attack errors.  With the set tied at 11 the Gators took the lead for good going on a quick four point run to force a timeout.  From there the Gators took advantage of the shaky attack by the Toros who tallied 12 errors on the set.  Back-to-back kills by Horton, a service ace by Brice, and a service error by Dominguez Hills gave SF State the first set 25-19.

The second set started much the same way as the first, with Cal State Dominguez Hills jumping out to the early lead.  As they did in the first the Gators battled back eventually tying the set at 17 on the first of four big kills by Williams.  The Gators went on a quick run and took the lead late 21-17.  The Toros cut the lead to two, 24-22 late, but Clark put it away with her sixth kill of the match, giving the Gators the frame 25-22.

Just like in the previous two sets CSUDH raced out to the early lead.  The Toros led by as much as four, 15-11, midway through the set.  As they did the previous two sets the Gators battled back slowly.  SF State finally tied the set at 19 following a kill by Morgan.  The Gators took the lead on the next play following another error by the Toros.  The final five points featured three ties and one lead change, with the Gators ultimately taking the set and the match, 27-25, on back-to-back kills by Morgan.

SF State continues its road trip down south with a match at the Eagles Nest against Cal State L.A. tomorrow.  First serve for that match has been moved to 1:00 p.m.  Live stats will be available at sfstategators.com.
