Box Score BILLINGS, Mont. — The SF State Gators men's soccer team used a total team effort to key their 3-0 win over the Colorado Christian Cougars (3-1) this afternoon in the Second Round of the MSUB Classic in Billings, Montana.
"We had a specific game plan for this afternoon, that we practice on yesterday and we executed it perfectly in the match," said SF State Head Coach
Matt Barnes. "It was a total team effort today as everyone brought high energy to the pitch."
SF State (2-1) controlled the entire match as the Gators outshot Colorado Christian 20-5 including 8-2 in shots on goal attempts. The Gators also held an 11-4 corner kick advantage.
"Everyone saw minutes today and we did a lot of little things right that led us to this victory," added Barnes. "I am very proud of how our guys bounced back from Friday."
The Gators'
Jakob Velega scored the match's first goal in the ninth minute as he connected from a ball from
Sam Merritt from five yards out.
SF State continued its offensive onslaught as they doubled their lead in the 19
th minute when 2013 All-CCAA performer, Merritt, connected on a header off a ball from
James Aguirre.
The Cougars, who were dealt their first loss of the season, had a chance to cut the Gator lead in half, but
Daniel Boyer stopped Luke Burgard's attempt in the 27
th minute.
SF State had two chances late in the half to increase its lead but
Cameron De Jong's shot was blocked and
Andy Gomez's shot was stopped by Brandon Eide to send the Gators into the half with a 2-0 lead.
SF State sealed the win in the 67
th minute on a goal by Aguirre off a ball from
Emmanuel Serrano.
Colorado Christian had one more chance to get on the scoreboard, but
Colt Reichl stopped Weston Leake's shot attempt with seven minutes left in the match.
Boyer and Reichl each had a save in goal for the Gators, who will return to the pitch this Tuesday, September 16 at 1pm when they host Dominican University of California in a non-conference match at Cox Stadium.
