SAN FRANCISCO –SF State men's soccer team will begin its 2014 season this Tuesday, September 9 at 3pm when the Gators host Holy Names University at Cox Stadium. This will be a new era in Gator soccer as first-year head coach
Matt Barnes takes over the men's soccer program.
Coach
Matt Barnes will have 14 returners from last year's team back to go along with his 11 newcomers. Of the 14 returners, 8 were starters on the 2013 team. Including in those returners is All-CCAA performer
Sam Merritt who led the Gators with his four goals. Also back is goalkeeper
Colt Reichl, who posted a 1.62 goals against average with 82 saves and
Nick Harb who had two assists for SF State last season.
Holy Names will have two matches under their belt before its match with the Gators on Tuesday. The Hawks lost 3-0 to Cal Poly Pomona this past Thursday afternoon and will travel to the University of Antelope Valley this Saturday afternoon for another non-conference match.
After their match on Tuesday, the Gators will travel to Billings, Mont., as they will participate in the MSUB Rimrock Classic, sponsored by TNT Automotive and Marine. Their conference opener will be on September 26 at 12:30pm, when they host Cal State Stanislaus.
