@SFState_WBB Cold From Behind The Arc In Loss To Pioneers

Junior forward Jayzyl Tauala had a career night in the losing effort for the Gators on Friday night.
Box Score SAN FRANCSISCO – The SF State women's basketball team had a poor shooting night from deep, as they connected on just 1-for-11 from behind the three point line.  The Gators (0-9/0-4 CCAA) shot just 35.8 percent from the floor as they fell to visiting Cal State East Bay 69-51 Friday night at the SF State Gymnasium.

The Gators shooting woes started in the opening half, but followed them early into the second.  SF State didn't have a player in double figures until midway through the second half when Michelle Sutton got hot and scored eight of her 15 points after the intermission.  She finished the night shooting 5-for-11 and was fantastic from the free throw line going 5-for-7.

Joining Sutton in double figures was junior forward Jayzyl Tauala who had her best game as a Gator.  She finished with a career-best 12 points going 5-for7 from the floor while grabbing three rebounds.  Savannah Camp scored 10 points on the night as well, eight coming after the break.

In the opening half the Gators combined to go 8-for-31 from the floor including a 1-for-9 mark from beyond the three point line.  The saving grace was the Gators exceptional performance from the charity stripe where they went 7-for-9.

Leticia Galarza got the Gators on the board hitting a three point basket from the top of the key, it was the only time the Gators would lead in the game.  With 8:20 left in the first period the Gators cut the Pioneers lead to two points, 19-17.  That is as close as the Gators would get as CSUEB went on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 28-17 lead.  The wrapped up the first half up nine, 33-24.

In the second half the Gators offense was much better, they took just two shots from deep, going 0-for-2 but shot 50 percent overall, going 11-for-22 from the floor after the intermission.

The Pioneers had four players in double figures on the evening, led by Tori Breshers game-high 16.  With 2:05 left in the game CSUEB pushed their lead to 25 which was the largest lead of the evening.  A big reason for that gap was the difference in the rebound totals.  Cal State East Bay grabbed 48 rebounds to the Gators 25, allowing for 14 second chance points and 44 points in the paint.

The Gators return to action tomorrow night when they host Cal State Monterey Bay, tip off for that game is slated for 5:30 p.m. at the SF State Gym at the Don Nasser Family Plaza.
