SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State women's basketball team heads back on the road starting Tuesday when the Gators travel to Reno, Nevada to take on Nevada in an exhibition game at the Lawler Center at 11:00 a.m. They wrap up the week traveling to Arcata, Calif. to battle Humboldt State on Saturday at 5:35 p.m.
The Gators (3-4/1-1 CCAA) are coming off a 2-1 week, SF State opened last week taking down NAIA foe Cal Maritime 73-42 before splitting their weekend slate of games, defeating Chico State 49-47 followed by a 61-54 loss at the hands of Stanislaus State.
As a team, SF State is averaging 55.0 points per game which ranks 13
th in the CCAA, they are shooting 32.0 percent from the field which is also 13
th in the conference. Defensively, the Gators shine. SF State is second in the conference in points allowed at 58.3 and opponents field goal percentage at 36.8 percent. They are tops in the CCAA in turnovers created, averaging 20.1 turnovers created a game.
In the nation, the Gators have several impressive statistics. The Gators are eighth in the country in free-throw percentage, shooting 78.1 percent as a team from the charity stripe. They are ninth in the nation in blocked shots per game, averaging 5.6. Freshman center
Kiara Ginwright is currently fourth in the nation in blocked shots per game, averaging 3.30, that is also tops in the CCAA.
Laura Lawson, is one of three Gators averaging better than 10 points per game. She is tops on the team with 11.9 points per contest. She is also 29
th in the nation averaging 10.7 rebounds per contest.
Naila Washington is second on the Gators averaging 11.0 points per game, followed by fellow CCSF transfer
Tatsiana Dashkevich who is averaging 10.0 points per game.
Tuesday's game against Nevada will be their third annual "When I Grow Up" game, which is expected to bring 3,600 students from the Washoe County school district. The game will feature live stats and live audio and can be viewed on NevadaWolfPack.tv.
UNR enters Tuesday's contest looking for its first win of the 2015-16 season, they are currently 0-8 which includes a 0-5 mark at home. In their last game the Wolf Pack fell by four points on the road at UC Irvine 68-64. As a team, UNR is averaging 56.6 points per game, and shooting 36.3 percent from the field. They are allowing 73.8 points per game and their opponents are shooting 47.7 percent from the floor.
Leading the Wolf Pack in scoring is senior forward Nyasha LeSure, who averages 13.3 points per contest, she is also tops in the team averaging 6.1 rebounds per game. Tuesday's contest marks the 10
th time these two teams have faced each other, with the Gators holding a 5-4 series advantage. The series dates back to the 1974-75 season when the Wolf Pack defeated the Gators 38-23. The last time these two teams faced each other was on Dec. 29, 1988 when UNR defeated SF State 73-30.
Humboldt State enters Saturday's CCAA contest with a 3-5 overall record, and are 1-1 in the CCAA. Last week they split home and road conference games, taking down Cal State San Marcos on the road 69-52 before falling to Cal State L.A. at home 88-74.
As a team, the Jacks are averaging 67.4 points per game and shooting 35.7 percent from the field. They are allowing 70.4 points per contest, with their opponents shooting 41.9 percent from the floor. Leading the team in scoring is Amanda Kunst who is averaging 15.4 points per game which is fifth in the CCAA.
Saturday's contest marks the 67
th time these two teams have faced each other, with series split 33-33. The series dates back to the 1974-75 season in which the Gators defeated the Jacks 50-49. The last time these two teams squared off was on Jan. 31, 2015 in Arcata with the Jacks taking home the win 85-61.
