Women's Basketball SF State Sports Information

@SFState_WBB To Host So-Cal Powers

SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State women's basketball team returns home this weekend taking on Southern California rivals UC San Diego and Cal Poly Pomona.  Friday's game against the Tritons will be televised regionally on Comcast Hometown Network channel 104, both games are slated for a 5:30 p.m. tip off.
 
The Gators (0-20/0-16 CCAA) enter this weekend's contest averaging 54.8 points per game which ranks 12th in the CCAA, they are shooting 34.3 percent from the field which is also last in the conference.  Defensively, the Gators are allowing 74.2 points per game and teams are shooting 46.8 percent from the floor, both last in the conference. 
 
Junior guard Jasmine Flanagan is racking up the steals this season.  The native of Corona, Calif., is averaging 2.3 steals per contest which ranks 61st out of 250 players in the country, it is also tops in the CCAA.  As a team, the Gators average just 8.2 steals per game.  She has accounted for 26 percent of the team's total steals picking up 43 of the teams 164.  She has at least one steal in every game this season and has two-straight games of four or more steals.
 
Senior forward Michelle Sutton is having a career-year.  The second year Gator is averaging 11.0 points per game which is tops on the team and 20th in the CCAA.  Her 209 points is 17th in the conference.
 
UC Sand Diego enters Friday's contest with an overall record of 12-9 and 10-6 in the CCAA which has them sitting in fifth in the conference.  As a team, they average 70.4 points per game which is third in the conference and 86th in the country.  They shoot 41.5 percent from the field which is also third in the CCAA.  Defensively, they hold their foes to 65.3 points per contest and limit them to 38.3 percent shooting.  Two players average double figures for the Tritons, they are led by former Gator Farrah Shokoor.  In her first year with UCSD she averages 14.0 points per game and 12.2 rebounds per game.
 
Friday's contest marks the 27th time these two teams have squared off.  UC San Diego owns a 22-4 advantage in the series that dates back to 1987.  When the Gators and Tritons first faced each other the Gators defeated UCSD 67-63 at home.  The last time these two teams squared off was on January 9 this year when the Gators lost on the road 80-43.  
 
The Broncos enter this weekend receiving 13 votes in the USA Today Division II Women's Coaches' Poll.  CPP is 15-3 overall and 13-3 in the CCAA which has them in third in the conference standings.  They are currently riding two-game winning streak and have won eight of their last 10. As a team, they are averaging 74.9 points per game which is tops in the CCAA and 30th in the country.  They are shooting an astounding 46 percent from the floor which is also tops in the country and ranks 13th in the nation.  Defensively, they are holding their opponents to 64.0 points per game and 37.2 percent shooting.  The Broncos have two of the most prolific scorers in the conference on their team in Jada Blackwell and Ariel Marsh.  Blackwell averages 19.5 points per game which is 26th in the nation, while Marsh averages 17.7 points per game which ranks 59th in the country. 
 
Saturday's contest marks the 48th time the Gators and Broncos have matched up.  The series dates back to 1877 when the Gators lost on the road 72-59.  The last time these two teams faced each other the Broncos defeated the Gators at home 80-43.
 
The Student Athlete Advisory Committee is sponsoring a canned food drive, fans are encouraged to bring in canned foods for a chance to enter the half-court shot competition that will be taking place at halftime of the men's and women's games.
