SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State Gators will return home this weekend for a non-conference three-game series with Fresno Pacific (6-2, 0-0 Pac West) beginning this Friday, February 20 at 2pm for a single nine-inning game at Maloney Field. The series will conclude with a scheduled doubleheader this Saturday, February 21 starting at 11am.
The Gators are coming off a 1-3 conference opening series with then No. 15 UC San Diego. The Gators lost 8-0, 12-4 and 2-1 before defeating the Tritons 3-0 in the series finale on Sunday. In the series finale,
Peter Reyes (1-1) picked up the win pitching 5.2 scoreless innings of three-hit ball, walking four and striking out two.
Cory Davis came in relief of Reyes and pitched 3.1 scoreless innings of two-hit ball, striking out four and walking four. Davis recorded his first save of the season and 14
th of his career, which ties him for second on the Gators' all-time career list.
Danny Souza had three of the Gators' 8 hits including two two-out run scoring singles. Two other Gators had two hits apiece in
Mark Lindsay and
Ryan Burke.
Burke leads the team with his .360 batting average, 9 hits, .385 on-base percentage, .500 on-base percentage, 12 total bases and three doubles.
Bryce Cherry has a team leading .524 slugging percentage while he is tied with Souza each with one triple. Souza also is tied with
Fernando Escobar for the team lead in runs batted in with four.
SF State (2-5, 1-3 CCAA) has five stolen bases this season with five different players each stealing a base in Souza, Lindsay,
Garrett Heisinger,
Nazareth Thibodeaux and
Jacob Lopez.
Ryan Bohnet's 2.08 earned run average leads the Gators' pitching staff while Davis leads the team with his 7 strikeouts. The senior reliever is also tied with
Shane Martin each with three appearances. Reyes and
Ryan Romero have recorded the two SF State victories.
Fresno Pacific is coming off a three-game home stand against then No. 8 Chico State which the Sunbirds took the first two games 2-1 and 3-2. They lost the third game 6-5 with all three games going extra-innings.
Baron Bower leads the Sunbird hitting attack with his .500 batting average, .786 slugging percentage and .636 on-base percentage. Michael Hostetler has scored a team leading 7 runs scored and is tied with Preston Scott each with 11 hits and four doubles. Scott and Nick Pate have a team leading 8 runs batted in and Michael Tittle has stolen a team best three bases.
Their pitching staff has a team 1.96 earned run average with Wilson Ashford's 0.64 ERA leading the way. Kyle Rasmussen's two wins, which he picked up in both of the Sunbirds' victories against Chico State in relief, leads the staff. Five pitchers have recorded double digits in strikeouts with Jake Martinez leading the way with 17.
After this weekend, the Gators will return to the conference part of their schedule as they will host Cal State L.A. in a four-game series Feb. 27-Mar 1.
