SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State women's basketball team will play its final two home games this weekend, hosting Cal State Stanislaus on Friday at 5:30 before wrapping up the weekend against Chico State on Saturday, also at 5:30 p.m. Saturday's game against the Wildcats will be senior night, the Gators will say their farewell to four outstanding senior student-athletes.
The Gators (0-22/0-18 CCAA) are coming off an 0-2 weekend, but are playing their best basketball of the season, after falling to UC San Diego on Friday 76-65 and Cal Poly Pomona 74-67 on Saturday. In both home losses the Gators held a halftime lead, something that had only happened twice this season. In the UCSD game the Gators shot a season-high 52 percent from the floor. Against the Broncos, the Gators were not intimidated playing against the third place team in the CCAA, the Gators entered intermission with an 11 point lead.
As a team, SF State is averaging 55.8 points per game which ranks 12
th in the CCAA, they are shooting 35.6 from the floor which is also last in the CCAA. Part of the problem there is the Gators shooting from three point range where they are shooting just 26.3 percent from behind the arc.
Leading the team is senior forward
Michelle Sutton. Sutton was named the Female Gator of the Week for her performance last weekend against the Tritons and Broncos. On the regionally televised game against UCSD she tied a career-high with 17 points. For the year, Sutton averages 11.4 points per game which is 19
th in the CCAA. She has scored 10 or more points in 14 games this year and including three-straight.
Cal State Stanislaus enters Friday's contest with an overall record of 6-16 and are 3-14 in the CCAA. They are currently riding a four-game losing streak that dates back to Feb. 6. On the road the Warriors are just 2-9 this year and 1-8 in conference play.
As a team, they are averaging 64.8 points per game which is seventh in conference, they are shooting just 35.8 percent which is 11
th. Defensively, they are allowing 73.0 points per game which is 11
th in the CCAA and their opponents are shooting 42.7 percent against them. Leading the team is Jasmine Washington who averages 10.1 points per game.
Friday's contest marks the 71
st time these two teams have squared off. The Warriors own a slight edge in the series, 38-32. The first time these two teams faced each other was 1977-78 season with the Gators defeating the Warriors 93-40. Last time out, the Warriors rallied back from 15 down at halftime to defeat the Gators 70-68, the win ended a six-game winning streak for the Gators over the Warriors.
Chico State enters this weekend with an overall record of 8-14, in the CCAA they are 5-13. They are currently riding a three-game losing streak. On the road the Wildcats are 4-7. As a team, they are averaging 65.5 points per game which ranks fifth in the CCAA, they are shooting 38.8 percent from the field which is seventh. Defensively, the Wildcats allow 68.2 points per game which ranks 10
th in the conference and their opponents are connecting on 41.8 percent for their shots. Leading the team is Hannah Womack who averages 14.3 points per game.
This will be the 92nd time the Gators and Wildcats have squared off, in a rivalry that dates back to the old Golden State Conference days. Chico State owns a 70-21 advantage in the series that dates back to Feb. 27, 1971 when the Gators lost to the host Wildcats 72-28. Last time out, the Gators fell to the Wildcats in Chico, 67-40 on January 16, 2015.
Saturday's game against the Wildcats will be senior day, prior to tipoff the Gators will recognize seniors
