SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State Gator baseball team will return to conference action this weekend for a home four-game series with Cal State L.A. The two teams will begin the series with a single game this Friday, February 27 at 2pm at Maloney Field. They will then play a doubleheader this Saturday, February 28 with a scheduled first pitch of 11am. The series will conclude with a single game on Sunday, March 1 beginning at 11am.
The Gators (2-8. 1-3 CCAA) are coming off a 0-3 weekend against Fresno Pacific (9-2). During the weekend,
Nick Jackson batted .444 in the three games with four hits in 9 at bats. The sophomore outfielder scored twice drove in a run and had his first double of the season. Three other Gators also batted over .300 this weekend in
Mark Lindsay,
Chad Thurston and
Fernando Escobar. Lindsay batted .400 with four hits and also drove in a run and scored one run while Escobar and Thurston each batted .333.
Jacob Lopez drove in four of the Gators' runs and had two of SF State's five doubles. SF State pitchers struck out 15 Sunbird batters with
Nolan Sheridan leading the way with 5.
For the season, the Gators are led by
Bryce Cherry's .333 average and his .524 slugging percentage.
Ryan Burke and Lindsay are each batting .303 and team leading 10 hits. Burke also leads the team with his three doubles and 13 total bases while Lindsay has a team leading .361 on-base percentage.
Danny Souza has driven in a team leading five runs while Cherry, Jackson, Lindsay and
Joseph Chedid are all tied for the team lead with three runs scored. The Gator pitching staff is paced by
Ryan Bohnet's 3.09 earned run average and
Nolan Sheridan's 11 strikeouts.
Cal State L.A. (9-2, 4-0 CCAA) opened up its conference season with a four-game sweep at home over Sonoma State. The Golden Eagles are batting .332 as a team and are led by Paul Martinez's .393 batting average. Trent Zaks leads the team with his 12 runs batted in while Tyler Peralta has a team leading 11 runs scored. Zaks also leads the team with his four stolen bases and 6 doubles.
Their pitching staff has a team earned run average of 3.56 with Brandon Quintero has a team low 1.40 ERA. Quintero also leads the team with his 28 strikeouts while Ralph Ramirez has three of the Golden Eagle's 9 wins.
After this weekend, the Gators will return to the diamond for a four-game home and away series with Cal State East Bay March 6-8. SF State and the Pioneers will play single games in Hayward on March 6 and 8 while the doubleheader will be at SF State on March 7.
