SAN FRANCISCO – After having four games cancelled this past weekend because of the inclement weather in the Bay Area, the SF State Gators will return to the diamond this weekend in La Jolla, Calif., as they begin their California Collegiate Athletic Association season with a four-game series with the No. 15 UC San Diego Tritons. The series will begin this Friday, Feb. 13 under the lights at Triton Ballpark with a single game scheduled for first pitch at 6pm.
SF State is currently 1-2 after defeating Holy Names University last Tuesday night 8-3 in Oakland, Calif.
Ryan Burke and
Bryce Cherry lead the team each with their .364 batting average. They each also have two doubles while
Fernando Escobar has driven in a team high four runs.
Ryan Romero picked up the Gators' win last night as he pitched four innings, giving up one run and two hits. SF State pitchers have struck out 17 batters in 25 innings with four Gators recording at least three strikeouts each in
Ryan Bohnet,
Cory Davis,
Shane Martin and
Nolan Sheridan. The opponents are batting .205 against SF State's pitching staff after three games.
UC San Diego is currently 4-2 after being swept in a doubleheader by No. 5 Colorado Mesa 2-0 in both games. Troy Cruz leads the team with his .462 batting average and .696 on-base percentage in the Tritons' first six games. Jack Larsen has three of the Tritons' 7 doubles on the season and also has driven in a team leading five runs. Larsen is tied for the team lead with six runs scored.
Their pitching staff has a 1.56 earned run average with Trevor Scott pacing the staff with his 1.46 ERA. Scott also has 14 strikeouts with no walks in 12.1 innings of work.
After this weekend series in La Jolla, the Gators will return home to Maloney Field on Feb. 20 when they begin a three-game series with No. 36 Fresno Pacific out of the Pac West Conference.
