SAN FRANCISCO – After being off for a week, the SF State Gators will return to the diamond this weekend for a four-game series in Carson, Calif., with the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros. The Gators have won six of their last eight games including sweeping the four-game series from Cal State East Bay, March 6-8. The series with the Toros will begin this Friday, March 20 with a single nine-inning game at 3pm at Toro Field.
In their four-game series with Cal State East Bay, SF State batted .315 as a team while its pitching staff held the Pioneers to a .193 average.
Mark Lindsay batted .636 during the weekend with 7 hits in 11 at bats while crossing home plate four times. He also posted a .727 slugging percentage with a .765 on-base percentage. The senior catcher also threw out two potential base stealers.
During the series, the Gators (8-10, 7-5 CCAA) had 9 extra base hits of which 7 were doubles including two by
Ryan Burke. SF State had two triples one each from
Fernando Escobar and
Jacob Lopez. The Gators also stole four bases with two of those coming from
Nick Jackson.
Their pitching staff posted a 1.85 earned run average with
Ryan Bohnet,
Cory Davis,
Peter Reyes and
Nolan Sheridan picking up the wins. Davis also picked up a save, which was his 16
th career save at SF State which tied him with Joey Diaz for the school record. Bohnet had 5 strikeouts with one walk in his start while pitching 8 innings with Davis appearing in two games, pitching three scoreless innings, striking out two and walking no one. Sheridan pitched his first complete game of the season while giving up 7 hits and two earned runs. Reyes pitched six innings, giving up 5 hits and one run.
Preston Tarter started the series finale in recording the no-decision, pitching 7 innings of six-hit ball, giving up 3 runs, striking out one and walking two.
Lindsay is leading the way for the Gators' offensively with his .377 average, 23 hits, 10 runs scored and .472 on-base percentage. He is currently third in the CCAA in on-base percentage and fourth in batting average. Lopez is next on the team with his .319 batting average followed by
Bryce Cherry's .314 average. Cherry leads the Gators with his .471 slugging percentage and 6 doubles with Lopez leading the team with his 10 runs batted in and four stolen bases.
SF State has 27 doubles this season and five triples. Besides Cherry's six doubles, Burke has five and
Garrett Heisinger and Lopez each have four. SF State five triples have come off the bats of Lopez, Cherry, Escobar,
Danny Souza and
Joseph Chedid.
Sheridan has posted a team low 3.27 earned run average in a team high 33 innings pitched (which is 10
th in the CCAA). Bohnet leads the team with his 16 strikeouts with Sheridan, Reyes and
Ryan Romero each recording two wins. Davis has appeared in a team high 8 games while posting a 1.35 earned run average, 1-0 record and three saves (which ties him for third in the league). The senior reliever also has 15 strikeouts and 5 walks in 13.1 innings pitched.
SF State is currently tied with Cal State L.A. for fourth place in the conference heading into the four-game series in Carson. The Gators are one-game behind Cal Poly Pomona, who is in third place while Cal State Monterey Bay and UC San Diego are tied for first at 13-3. The top four teams at the end of the regular season on May 3 will receive a berth in the CCAA Baseball Championships in Stockton, Calif., May 7-10.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (13-11, 8-4 CCAA) is coming off a 1-3 weekend at Cal State East Bay. The Toros are 4-4 in their last 8 games including taking three out of four games from Cal State L.A. They are batting .284 as a team with Kamran Young's .436 average leading the team. Young also has posted a team high .821 slugging percentage and a .564 on-base percentage. He also has 7 of the Toros' 17 home runs to go along with his two triples. Brady Conlan has driven in a team leading 20 runs and has a team high 8 doubles.
The Toros pitching has a 4.25 earned run average with Winston Levandier leading the way with his 5-1 record, 2.72 earned run average and 35 strikeouts in 43 innings pitched. TyRay Gatewood has four saves and Kevin Brown has recorded two for the Toros, who are in 7
th place in the CCAA.
After Friday's single game at 3pm, the two teams will play a doubleheader that is scheduled to start at 11am. Then on Sunday, they will finish out the four-game series with an 11am starting single game at Toro Field.
The Gators will return home on Friday, March 27 as they will begin a four-game home and away series with Cal State Stanislaus. The two teams will play a single game on that Friday at 3pm at Maloney Field. The four-game series will move to Warrior Field on Saturday, March 28 for a 1pm starting doubleheader in Turlock. The series will then move back to SF State for a 1pm starting game at Maloney Field for the series finale.
