SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State Gators' baseball team will return home this Friday, March 27 at 3pm when they begin a four-game home away series with Cal State Stanislaus. The two teams will play a single nine-inning game this Friday at Maloney Field. The series will then move to Turlock for a 1pm starting doubleheader this Saturday, March 28 at Warrior Field. The two teams will conclude the four-game series on Sunday, March 29 for a single nine-inning game at SF State's Maloney Field with first pitch scheduled at 1pm.
SF State has won 8 of its last 12 games including 7 of the Gators' last 10 games to improve to 10-12 overall and 9-7 in the CCAA. The Gators are in fifth place, one game behind Cal State L.A. who currently holds the fourth spot. UC San Diego is in first place with its 15-4 conference record followed by Cal State Monterey Bay at 14-5 and Cal Poly Pomona at 11-5.
The top four teams at the end of the regular season on May 3 will advance to the CCAA Baseball Championships at the Klein Family Field Baseball Complex on the campus of the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif. The CCAA Championships run from May 7-10.
In their four conference series that the Gators have played in this season, they have split two of them (versus Cal State L.A. and at Cal State Dominguez Hills), swept Cal State East Bay (home and away) and went 1-3 at nationally ranked UC San Diego.
The Gators are batting .273 as a team with
Mark Lindsay leading the way. The two-time All-CCAA selection is batting .359 with his team high 28 hits of which four of them are doubles. Lindsay has posted a team leading .444 on-base percentage. He is currently fifth in the league in batting average and tied for 7
th in on-base percentage. The senior catcher is currently third on SF State's All-Time Hit List with 183, three away from moving past Bobby Matthews (1999-2002) into second place. Phil Kernan holds the record with 211 hits from 1992-95.
SF State has three other players batting .300 or higher in
Jacob Lopez (.313),
Bryce Cherry (.313) and
Nick Jackson (.300). Lopez and Jackson lead the team with their 12 runs scored while Lopez has drive in a team leading 13 runs. Cherry leads the Gators with his 7 doubles and two triples (tied for 1
st in the CCAA). Jackson also has an on-base percentage over .400 in .411 with his 18 hits and 12 walks in the 22 games he has played in this season.
Lopez leads the team with his four stolen bases while Cherry has posted a team high .484 slugging percentage.
SF State's pitching staff is paced by starter
Nolan Sheridan and reliever
Cory Davis. Sheridan has a recorded three of the Gators' 10 wins while posting a team low 3.29 earned run average in 41 innings pitched (tied for 5
th in the CCAA). Davis, who broke the career record with his 17
th save at SF State this past weekend in the Gators' 7-5 win on Saturday, has four saves this season in 10 appearances in 15.1 innings. He also has a 1-0 record with a 1.76 earned run average while striking out 18 batters and walked 6 batters.
Ryan Bohnet leads the team with his 21 strikeouts in 30 innings pitched. Bohnet along with
Ryan Romero and
Peter Reyes each have recording two wins this season.
Cal State Stanislaus (7-18, 2-13 CCAA) is batting .240 this season with four batters batting over .300 in Marcus Mastrobuoni (.324), Scott Stetson (.321), Stevie Robinson (.313) and Christian Kahler (.306). Stetson leads the team with his 26 hits and 17 runs scored while Mastrobuoini has driven in a team high 16 runs. Skip Ferreria has stolen a team leading 10 bases in 11 attempts. The Warriors have hit 11 home runs this season of which three are off the bat of Klayton Miller.
Their pitching staff has a 5.68 earned run average with Aaron Godinez recording a team low 3.20. Nick Voumard has three of their 7 wins while Tyler Murphy has a team leading 33 strikeouts.
After this weekend, the Gators will then face Cal State Monterey Bay in another four-game conference home and away series beginning on Thursday, April 2 in Seaside, Calif., with a 3pm starting nine-inning game. The series will then move to SF State's Maloney Field on Friday, April 3 for a noon starting doubleheader. The teams will finish off the series with a noon starting single game in Seaside, Calif.
