Box Score 2 ROHNERT PARK – The SF State Gators split this afternoon's road conference doubleheader at Sonoma State wining the night cap 4-3 and losing the opener 7-0.
Bryce Cherry drove in three of the Gators' four runs in the night cap with
Ryan Bohnet picking up the win and
Cory Davis recording his 8
th save. In the opener, the Seawolf duo of DeVon Golden and Mitch Coombs allowed just one hit by the Gators in the shutout victory.
Game OneSonoma State took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an Eric Ehlow run scoring single which brought in Cody Morris with the game's first run. Morris led off the inning for Sonoma State with his 8
th double of the season. Jourdan Weiks' first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left center, increased the hosts' lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning. Alex Crosby's two-out double in the fifth scored Weiks as the Seawolves took a 4-0 lead heading into the final four innings.
Mark Lindsay picked up the Gators' only hit in the sixth with a two-out single to right field after
Fernando Escobar walked to put runners on first and second.
Chad Thurston walked to load the bases, but Golden struck out the next Gator to end the Gator rally.
The Seawolves added three more runs in the eighth capped by a two-out two-run home run by Joseph Marquez to increase their lead to 7-0. Coombs retired the Gators in order in the top of the ninth as they host took the opener 7-0.
Golden (2-4) pitched 6 innings of one-hit ball, striking out 7 and walking three. Coombs pitched the final three scoreless innings while striking out two.
Sheridan (3-5) took the loss as he pitched his third complete game of the season, giving up 11 hits and 7 runs, walking two and striking out one.
Game TwoSF State (17-25, 16-19 CCAA) took a 2-0 lead in its half of the first inning. Escobar walked with one out and went to second on a two-out single by
Garrett Heisinger. Cherry then hit the sixth pitch he saw for a two-run double, his team leading 12
th of the season, to bring in Escobar and Heisinger with the game's first runs.
The Gators increased their lead to 3-0 in their half of the second.
Connor Fraser had a lead-off single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Danny Souza. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a suicide squeeze by
Andrew Breen.
Ryan Bohnet held the Seawolves without a base-runner until the bottom of the third. Spencer Neve had a lead-off single and went to third on a double by Phillip Ramos with no outs. With one out, Dustyn Macaluso singled to left to bring in Neve as Ramos went to third. Macaluso then stole second. Weiks brought in Ramos with a sacrifice fly to Cherry in right to cut the Gator lead to 3-2.
It looked like the Seawolves were going to take the lead in their half of the fourth inning. Alexander singled to lead-off the inning, but was picked off by Bohnet at first. Adam Manzer and Ehlow had back to back one-out singles, but Bohnert induced the next batter to ground out back to him for the second out. Then the sophomore pitcher induced the next Seawolf to ground out to Fraser at third and keep the score Gators 3-2.
SF State added a very important insurance run in the fifth. Escobar had a lead-off bunt single, he went to second on an infield single by Lindsay. That was Lindsay's 208
th single in his career, four away from breaking Phil Kernan's mark of 211 at SF State. Heisinger walked to load the bases for Cherry. The Gator right fielder singled home Escobar with a single to right field to give the visitors a 4-2 lead.
Sonoma State (22-22, 16-19 CCAA) had another rally stopped by the Gators' defense in the fifth. Macaluso had a one-out bunt single. He went to third on a two-out single by Crosby to left center but the Gators' center fielder
Nick Jackson threw out Crosby at second on a perfect throw to end the Seawolf inning.
The Seawolves cut the Gator lead to 4-3 in their half of the sixth inning. Alexander doubled down the right field line. He advanced to third on an infield single by Manzer. Alexander scored on a fielder's choice by Ehlow to Breen at shortstop which Manzer was out at second. Matthew Richards came in to pinch run for Ehlow. Bohnet picked off the potential tying run at first for the second out. Neve then singled with two outs, which brought in
Cory Davis to relieve Bohnet. Ramos hit the third pitch he saw for a double to put Seawolves on second and third with two outs. Morris walked to load the bases, but Davis induced the next batter to ground out to Fraser at third to end the inning.
Davis retired the Seawolves in order in the bottom of the seventh as he recorded his 8
th save of the season, which placed fifth on the Gators' single season list in save. The senior reliever now has 21 saves in his career which is a Gator record.
Ryan Luna (4-4) recorded the loss for Sonoma State, who is in a tie for sixth place with the Gators in the CCAA. They are two games out of fifth place, which Cal State Dominguez Hills currently sits in. The two teams are also four games out of fourth place (Cal State L.A.). The top four teams at the end of the regular season on May 3 will receive a bid to the CCAA Baseball Championships, May 7-10, in Stockton, California.
Luna gave up 7 hits and four runs, walking three and striking out three. Five different Seawolves had two hits apiece in Macaluso, Alexander, Manzer, Neve and Ramos.
Bohnet (3-5) pitched 5.2 innings, giving up 11 hits and three runs while striking out four in picking up the win for the Gators. Davis pitched the final 1.1 innings for the save. Cherry had two of the Gators' 7 hits while driving three of their four runs. Escobar scored two of SF State's four runs.
The two teams will conclude the four-game series tomorrow at noon for a single nine-inning game at The Swamp at Maloney Field on SF State's campus.
