SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State Gators will end their regular season this week with five games including a four-game home series with nationally ranked Cal Poly Pomona. The Gators will begin the week with a non-conference game on Tuesday, April 29 at Sonoma State. SF State will end its season this Sunday, May 3 with Senior Day. First pitch for Senior Day is scheduled for 11am with the Senior Day Ceremony beginning at 10:40am.
SF State is currently 17-26 overall and 16-20 in the CCAA. The Gators are now tied for 7
th with Cal State Stanislaus, one game out of sixth place (Sonoma State) and two games out of fifth place (Cal State Dominguez Hills) with just four conference games left in the regular season. The top four teams at the end of the day on May 3 will receive a bid to the CCAA Baseball Championships, May 7-10, in Stockton, Calif. Cal Poly Pomona and UC San Diego are tied for first with Cal State Monterey Bay with two games behind in third place and Cal State L.A. in fourth place, four games out of first.
The Gators went 1-3 against Sonoma State in their home away series.
Ryan Bohnet (3-5) picked up the win in the Gators' 4-3 win on Saturday in game two of the doubleheader in Rohnert Park. Bohnet pitched 5.2 innings, giving up 11 hits, three runs while striking out four.
Cory Davis recorded his 8
th save of the season by pitching 1.1 scoreless innings of relief, giving up one hit and walking one. With his save, Davis now increases his SF State career record to 21.
In the opener on Friday at SF State, the Gators lost 11-6 as the Seawolves scored 10 runs from the fourth inning to the seventh.
Peter Reyes (3-6) recorded the loss in the start with
Nick Jackson and
Mark Lindsay with two hits apiece. Lindsay also drove in two runs.
SF State lost the opener of Saturday's doubleheader in Rohnert Park 7-0 with Lindsay recording the Gators' only hit.
Nolan Sheridan (3-5) picked up the loss, pitching 8 innings, giving up 11 hits and 7 runs while striking out one and walking two. Sheridan moves up to 7
th place on the Gators' all-time career innings pitched with 204.1. He also has 11 wins which is one away from moving into the top 10 career list.
In the night cap on Saturday, the Gators picked up the 4-3 win with
Bryce Cherry driving in three of SF State's four runs while
Fernando Escobar scored twice. With his double, Cherry now has 12 for the season which places him four away from moving into the top 10 single season list at SF State.
SF State lost a heartbreaker on Sunday at home in the series finale 6-5 in 11 innings. Cherry had three of the Gators' 11 hits with Escobar and
Garrett Heisinger each with two. Heisinger also hit his first home run, a solo shot in the second, in a Gator uniform. Lindsay also had a hit to give him 209 for his career, three away from holding the Gators' all-time hits record. Phil Kernan (1992-95) currently holds the mark with 211.
Davis recorded the loss in relief falling to 2-4. The senior reliever pitched five innings of four-hit relief, giving up just one run, walking one and striking out four. He now has appeared in 46 games at SF State, which is seventh on the all-time appearances list and he is three away from moving into sixth place. With his save on Saturday, Davis now has 8 which is fifth on the Gators' single season list.
SF State is batting .276 heading into this week with two batters batting over .300 in Lindsay (.342) and
Chad Thurston (.336). Lindsay also leads the team with his 53 hits, 58 total bases, 27 walks and .449 on-base percentage. He is currently 8
th in the CCAA in on-base percentage, 7
th in walks and tied for 9
th in hits.
Jacob Lopez leads the Gators with his 24 runs batted in while Jackson has scored a team leading 29 runs. Lopez and Jackson are tied for the team lead each with 6 stolen bases. Cherry leads the Gators with his 12 doubles and three triples, which places him tied for 8
th and second respectively in both categories. Heisinger is right behind Cherry with his 11 doubles while he has the Gators lone home run. Cherry also leads the team with his .427 slugging percentage. SF State's pitching staff has four players with three wins each in
Preston Tarter, Reyes, Bohnet and Sheridan. Davis leads the Gators' pitchers with his 2.97 ERA, 8 saves and 38 strikeouts.
The Gators' Tuesday opponent is the Sonoma State Seawolves. First pitch for Tuesday's non-conference game at Rohnert Park is scheduled for 2:30pm at Seawolf Diamond. Alex Crosby leads Sonoma State with his .370 batting average, 60 hits, 12 doubles, 30 runs batted in, .512 slugging percentage and three home runs. Devin Alexander, Bobby Raymos and Ryan Luna each have four wins to lead Sonoma State's pitching staff.
Luna has a team leading 63 strikeouts and DeVon Golden has a team low 1.99 earned run average.
SF State will then host No. 19 Cal Poly Pomona in its last four games of the regular season this weekend at The Swamp at Maloney Field. The Broncos are currently 33-13 overall and 25-11 in the CCAA, which ties them with No. 22 UC San Diego for first place. Cal Poly Pomona was also ranked first in the first NCAA Division II West Region poll that was released last week.
Cal Poly Pomona is batting .288 as a team with five Broncos batting over .300 in Christian Kelley (.365), Nick Cooksey (.354), Kyle Garlick (.343), Mike Philp (.319) and Brennen Salgado (.313). Garlick leads the Broncos with his 52 runs scored, 14 home runs, 43 runs batted in, 7 stolen bases and .663 slugging percentage. Nick Cooksey has a team 11 doubles along with a team leading 63 hits. The Broncos' pitching staff has a team earned run average of 2.89 with Ryan Olson leading the way with his 8-0 record and 1.67 earned run average. Chris Powell leads the Broncos with his 64 strikeouts and JJ Franklin has a team leading 10 saves which also leads the CCAA.
Game times for this weekend are Friday, May 1 at 3pm (single nine-inning game), Saturday, May 2 at noon (doubleheader) and Sunday, May 3 at 11am (single nine-inning game).
