SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State Gators will play five road games this weekend including four conference games starting tomorrow afternoon at Sonoma State. After their non-conference game tomorrow in Rohnert Park at 2:30pm, the Gators will travel to San Bernardino for a four-game CCAA series with Cal State San Bernardino.
SF State is 13-17 overall and 12-12 in the CCAA after splitting its four-game home and away series with Cal State Monterey Bay. The Gators are now tied with Sonoma State for fifth place in the CCAA each with .500 conference records. The top four teams at the end of the regular season on May 3 will receive a bid to the 2015 CCAA Baseball Championships (May 7-10) in Stockton, Calif. Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State L.A. are tied for first place (17-7) with UC San Diego (19-8) and Cal State Monterey Bay (18-10) holding the top four spots.
The Gators lost both of the road games and won their two home games with Cal State Monterey Bay this past weekend. In the series opener last Thursday in Seaside, the Gators lost a slug fest 15-12 in 10 innings after taking a 6-0 lead after the first inning and half.
Garrett Heisinger had four of the Gators' season high 19 hits with
Nick Jackson scoring four of the 12 runs.
Then in the doubleheader at SF State on Friday, the Gators swept the Otters 5-3 and 4-3. In the first game on Friday,
Connor Fraser drove in
Jacob Lopez with what proved to be the game-winning run in SF State's three-run eighth inning.
Joseph Chedid picked up the win in relief, pitching a scoreless eighth inning while
Cory Davis recording his fifth save with a scoreless ninth. Four Gators had two hits apiece in Jackson, Fraser,
Bryce Cherry and
Andrew Breen. In the night cap on Friday, Lopez's walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh brought in
Danny Souza with the game-winning run in the 4-3 Gator win. Davis (2-2) recorded the win in relief with Heisinger and
Mark Lindsay each with two hits apiece.
On Saturday in the series finale, SF State's late-inning rally fell short as the Otters won the series finale 7-5 and the two teams split the series. Heisinger had three of the Gators' 8 hits finishing the weekend batting .600 (9 for 15) with Cherry driving in two of their runs.
After this weekend, the SF State is batting .282 with four players batting over .300 in Lindsay (.364), Jackson (.337), Heisinger (.310) and
Chad Thurston (.302). Lindsay leads the team with his 39 hits and .469 on-base percentages. The senior catcher is third in the CCAA in on-base percentage and fourth in average. He is also tied with Cherry each with 43 total bases. Cherry leads the team with his 10 doubles (tied for 6
th in the CCAA) and three triples (second in the conference) with Lopez leading the team with his 21 RBIs. Jackson has scored a team high 21 runs and is tied with Lopez each with four steals.
Nolan Sheridan leads the team with his three wins with
Ryan Bohnet recording a team leading 28 strikeouts. Sheridan has pitched in 52.2 innings which is 7
th in the CCAA and Davis' 5 saves ties him for second.
SF State will travel to Rohnert Park tomorrow afternoon at 2:30pm for a non-conference game with Sonoma State (20-17). The Seawolves are batting .263 as a team with Alex Crosby leading the way with his .359 average, 47 hits, three home runs, 25 RBIs, 7 stolen bases and .496 slugging percentage. Jourdan Weiks has a team leading 11 doubles and scored a team high 22 runs. Their pitching staff has a 3.24 earned run average with Ryan Luna's 2.22 ERA leading the way. Luna also has a team high 57 strikeouts.
After Tuesday, the Gators will travel to San Bernardino for a four-game conference series with Cal State San Bernardino. The series will begin with a 6pm nine-inning game this Friday at Fiscalini Field in San Bernardino. The two teams will then play a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 2pm. The series finale will be this Sunday at 11am.
The Coyotes are 6-25 overall and 4-18 in the CCAA after being swept by Cal State Stanislaus at home this past weekend. They are batting .238 as a team with Warren Fishback's .310 average leading the way with a team high 9 doubles and 15 runs batted in. Ruben Rios leads the pitching staff with his 2.63 earned run average and 5-2 record with Tyler Wells striking out a team high 50 batters.
SF State will return home after their four-game series with the Coyotes on Tuesday, April 14 at 3pm, when the Gators host Academy of Art in a non-conference game at The Swamp at Maloney Field. They will then Chico State in a four-game series next weekend (April 17-19).
