SAN FRANCISCO-- The SF State Gators men's soccer team will end their three-match road trip this Sunday, September 27 with an 11:30am starting conference match with Cal State Monterey Bay at the Otter Sports Complex in Seaside. The Gators are coming off a 2-1 week which they improved to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA.
This is the first time since 2003 that the Gators have recorded their fifth win in just their seventh match. In 2001, SF State opened up its season with a 6-0-1 record while in 2014 they started 4-1-2.
SF State is coming off a 2-1 week with victories over Holy Names (1-0) and at Cal State East Bay (3-1) and a 2-0 loss at Stanislaus State as the Gators begin CCAA play this season.
In their 1-0 win over Holy Names last Tuesday at home,
Sam Merritt scored the match's only goal in the 25
th minute off a corner kick from
Ashley Watson that went to
Max Talbert who found Merritt for what proved to be the game-winner. Jimenez had five saves in goal for the Gators en route to his fourth shutout. This was SF State's final non-conference match of the season as the Gators finished 4-1 in those five matches including 3-0 at home.
The Gators then lost 2-0 in their CCAA opener of the season at Stanislaus State this past Friday. The Warriors scored their two goals in the first 22 minutes of the match and held on for the 2-0 win. Jimenez had 9 saves in goal for SF State.
SF State rebounded on Sunday with a 3-1 win over Cal State East Bay in Hayward. Three different Gators scored goals in
Robert Kelly,
Armando Flores and
James Aguirre. Flores connected on the game-winner in the 58
th minute of the match. He also assisted on Kelly's goals while
Nolan Parker,
Emmanuel Serrano and Jimenez also had assists. Jimenez recorded 7 saves in goal for the victors as he now has 31 on the season.
For the season, Merritt and
Jakob Velega leads the team with their two goals apiece with Merritt recording a team high two game-winning goals. Velega, Flores and
Joe Rousseau have registered the Gators' other three game-winning goals. Also scoring for the Gators this season are: Talbert, Flores, Kelly, Rousseau and Aguirre. Jimenez leads the team with two assists with nine other players recording assists.
Jimenez has posted a 0.56 goals against average with 31 saves this season in 7 matches. He also has posted four shutouts this season.
In the latest CCAA statistics report, Jimenez is leading the conference in saves percentage, wins, shutouts and is third in goals against average. The Gators' Jimenez is 15
th in saves percentage, 18
th in saves and 21
st in goals against average in the nation.
The Otters are 4-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the CCAA after splitting their two conference games on the road this weekend. Cal State Monterey Bay defeated Cal State East Bay 2-1 in Hayward on Friday evening and lost 4-0 at Stanislaus State. Michael Maul is tied with Alejandro Garcia for the team lead with two goals apiece. Maul is also tied with William Blackbum each with two assists. Maul has scored two of the Otters' four game-winning goals this season. Evan Drake has posted a 1.67 goals against average in six matches with 19 saves and two shutouts.
After this weekend, the Gators will return home for two CCAA matches on Oct. 2 and 4. They will host Sonoma State on Oct. 2 at 3pm and Humboldt State on Oct. 4 at 2pm.
