SAN FRANCISCO– After being on the road for their last three matches to start the CCAA season, the SF State Gators men's soccer team will return home to host a pair of matches this weekend at Cox Stadium. The Gators will entertain the Sonoma State Seawolves and Humboldt State Lumberjacks in a pair of CCAA matches this Friday and Sunday.
The Gators are 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the CCAA after losing a 2-1 heartbreaker at Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday afternoon in Seaside.
Armando Flores scored the match's first goal in just the fourth minute off a missed shot by
Ashley Watson to give SF State the 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 Gators until the 57
th minute when the Otters connected on a penalty kick to tie the match at one. Emmanuel Corona scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 80
th minute for Cal State Monterey Bay.
Going into their weekend matches with Sonoma State and Humboldt State, the Gators are averaging 1.24 goals a game while giving up 0.74 goals a game. Three players are tied for the team lead with two goals in
Sam Merritt,
Jakob Velega and Flores. Merritt leads the team with his two game-winning goals while he is tied with Flores each with five points.
Emmanuel Jimenez and
Ashley Watson each have a team high two assists.
Jimenez has posted a 0.52 goals against average with 35 saves and four shutouts in 8 matches.
Kevin Esquivel has recorded two saves in 33 minutes of action in goal for the Gators.
SF State will host Sonoma State this Friday at 3pm in its first conference match at home this season. The Seawolves come into the match with a 5-2-1 overall record including a 2-2 record in the CCAA. They defeated Humboldt State 2-1 in overtime in Arcata this past Wednesday and came back to defeat Chico State 2-0 at home on Sunday.
Brentom Framer leads the Seawolves with his 11 points as he has four goals and assisted on three. He is tied with Armando Coronel and Josh Sanchez for the team lead in assists. TJ Perez has scored a team leading five goals including two game-winning goals. Mitch North has posted a 1.11 goals against average with 37 saves and three shutouts in eight matches. Sean Taufer has seen action 14 minutes this season in goal for the Seawolves.
The Gators will also host Humboldt State this Sunday at 2pm in their second conference match of the weekend. The Lumberjacks come into this weekend with a 1-7 overall record and a 0-4 record in the CCAA after losing their last five in a row since defeated Holy Names 1-0 on September 10. Humboldt State lost 2-1 in overtime to Sonoma State and 1-0 to Chico State last week at home. Braxton Griffin leads the team with his six points (team high two goals and two assists). Griffin is tied with Mitch Butt, Riki Michael and Trice Smith each with two assists. Christopher Cherms has posted a 2.23 goals against average with 34 saves and one shutout.
After this weekend, the Gators will travel to Southern California for a pair of CCAA matches on October 9 and 11. They will face Cal State San Marcos on October 9 at 3pm and UC San Diego on October 11 at 2pm in La Jolla.
