SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State women's volleyball team returns to the friendly confines of the Main Gymnasium at the Don Nasser Family Plaza this week for a crucial three-match home stand. The Gators will host Stanislaus State on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. before hosting back-to-back contests against Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday and Saturday, with both matches slated for a 7:00 p.m. start time.
The Gators enter this week with a 4-7 record and are currently 2-2 in the CCAA. The 2-2 mark has them sitting squarely eighth in the conference standings. Last week, the Gators split home and road matches falling to Chico State in five sets at home before holding off Cal State San Marcos in five on the road.
As a team, SF State is averaging 11.8 kills per set which ranks 11
th in conference and is hitting .153 which is 12
th in the league. In conference play the Gators are ninth in kills per set, averaging 12.41 kips, while hitting .167. Their opponents are averaging 12.7 kills per set and are hitting .211.
Leading the team in kills is senior outside hitter
Jaclyn Clark, who has 116 kills on the year which is 18
th in the CCAA. The Gators have four players averaging better than 2.0 kills per set. Second on the team is red-hot
Taylor Brownlee who has 95 kills on the year and averages 2.71 kills per set.
Last week, Brownlee recorded back-to-back career-bests in kills. She started the week with 14 kills against the Wildcats before finishing off the week with 24 kills against the Cougars. The 24 kills ties a single-match team-high for the year, and is tied for fifth most in program history.
Sophomore setter
Catherine Feathers had a career-day on Friday afternoon. She finished the thrilling five set victory over Cal State San Marcos with her third career double-double, recording a career-high 54 assists with 11 digs.
Stanislaus State enters this week on a cold-streak. After winning seven in a row to start the year, including a straight-sets win over the Gators on Sept. 15, the Warriors have lost four of their last five including three-straight. Last week they went 0-3, losing back-to-back five set matches against Cal State East Bay and Humboldt State before getting swept at home by Sonoma State. Overall, they are 8-4 on the year with a 2-4 mark in conference.
As a team, the Warriors are averaging 12.91 kills per set, and hitting .217. Their opponents are averaging 11.76 kills per set and hitting .163. Leading the team in kills is Taylor Massengale, who has 138 kills on the year, averaging 3.07 kills per set.
On Friday, SF State welcomes Cal State L.A. to the Main Gym. The Golden Eagles enter this week's contest currently receiving votes in the AVCA coaches' poll. They are currently 10-4 overall with a 3-3 mark in the CCAA. Last week, they went 0-3 against Cal Poly Pomona, UC San Diego, and Cal State San Bernardino.
As a team, they are averaging 13.8 kills per set, hitting .246. Their opponents are averaging 11.3 kills per set while hitting .197. Senior outside hitter Iona Lofrano leads the team with 203 kills, averaging 4.23 kills per set. The 203 kills is second in the CCAA.
The Gators wrap up their busy week hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Toros enter this week with a 3-11 overall record and are 1-5 in the CCAA. Last week, CSUDH went 1-2 defeating Cal State Monterey Bay in five sets before falling in back-to-back nights to Cal State San Bernardino and UC San Diego.
As a team, the Toros are averaging 11.0 kills per set, hitting .118. Their opponents are averaging 12.8 kills per set and are hitting .197. Leading the team in kills is sophomore outside hitter/setter Rylee Kiger, who has 102 kills on the year, averaging 1.96 kills per set.
