Box Score 2 SAN FRANCISCO– The SF State Gators recorded their second consecutive shutout this afternoon as they defeated the visiting Concordia (Ore.) University Cavaliers 1-0 in a non-conference match at Cox Stadium.
Sam Merritt connected on a free kick from about 20 yards out for the game-winner in the 43
rd minute.
In SF State's head coach
Matt Barnes' two-year career at the helm of the Gator men's soccer program, they now have recorded nine shutouts including six at home. The Gators are also 9-1-2 at home including 6-0-1 in non-conference matches at Cox Stadium.
The Gators (2-0-0) controlled the majority of the match as they held a 19-9 shot advantage including a 7-4 advantage in shot on goals. SF State also had a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
SF State came out on fire early in the match as it looked like senior defender
Max Talbert was going to connected on a corner kick by
Ashley Watson in the 15
th minute, but the Cavaliers' Arne Niermann stopped his attempt from giving the hosts the early lead. Three seconds later, Neiermann stopped
Jakob Velega's attempts from going into the net as the match remained scoreless.
Talbert had another chance to give the Gators the lead, but his header sailed wide right.
Concordia (1-1-0) came right down the pitch after Talbert's attempt but
Emmanuel Jimenez recorded one of his four saves on the day in the 27
th minute.
The Gators had another chance to take the lead in the 31
st minute, but the Cavalier defense came up big in the 31
st minute as they stopped
KJ Ahlo's attempt from going into the goal.
In the 43
rd minute, the Cavaliers were called for a foul and
Sam Merritt made them pay as he connected on a free kick from 20-yards out to give SF State a 1-0 lead.
SF State had a chance double its lead but
JoeMack Leonardo's attempt sailed wide right in the 44
th minute to send the match into halftime with the Gators leading 1-0.
The Gators had another chance to double its lead in the 58
th minute, but Talbert's attempt was stopped by the Cavaliers' Mitch McCaw.
The hosts had one more shot on goal be stopped by McCaw in the 81
st minute as he kept Watson's penalty kick from going into the back of the net.
Concordia came right down the pitch after that and looked like they were doing to take the lead, but Jimenez snagged Trent Lowe's attempt from tying the match with less than eight minutes left in regulation.
The Cavaliers had one more chance to tie the match, but BJ Romac's shot sailed wide right as the Gators took the 1-0 non-conference win to improve to 2-0 on the season.
In the other match at Cox Stadium today, the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons improved to 1-1 with a 3-0 win over Humboldt State. Jon Huelsman scored two of the Tritons' goals including one on a penalty kick. Humboldt State, who lost 3-2 to Concordia on Friday, fell to 0-2 with the loss with Christopher Chermas recorded two saves in goal for the Lumberjacks. Jack Filla had four saves in net for the Tritons, who lost to the Gators 1-0 on Friday afternoon.
The Gators will return to the pitch this Thursday, September 10 at 2pm for a non-conference match with Dominican University of California in the First Round of the Kezar Classic at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco. SF State will also face Academy of Art this Saturday, September 12 at 4pm in the Second Round of the Kezar Classic at Kezar Stadium.
