@SFState_WBB Returns Home To Host Humboldt State On Comcast

SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State women's basketball team returns home this week taking on familiar foes Humboldt State and Cal Poly Pomona on Friday and Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at The Swamp.  Friday's contest against the Jacks will be televised regionally on Comcast Hometown Network.  Both games will feature live stats and video.

SF State enters Friday's game with an overall record of 5-14 which includes a 3-10 mark in the CCAA.  Last weekend the Gators went 0-2 on the road, falling to Cal State Dominguez Hills 65-55 on Friday, before wrapping up the road trip with a 66-57 loss at Cal State L.A.  The Gators are currently tied for 12th in the CCCAA standings, one game back of eighth place.  The top-eight teams advance to the CCAA Tournament following the conclusion of the regular season.

As a team, the Gators are averaging 50.5 points per contest which ranks 13th in the CCAA, while shooting 32.2 percent from the field, which is also 13th in the conference.  Their opponents are averaging 61.9 points per contest which is seventh in the CCAA, while shooting 38.2 percent from the field which ranks sixth.

Defensively, the Gators are stout.  SF State is tops in the conference and third in the nation in blocks per game, averaging 6.11.  A big reason for that impressive number of blocks per contest is freshman center Kiara Ginwright.  Ginwright is the nation's top shot blocker, averaging 4.05 blocks per game, her 77 total blocks is also tops in the nation.  The 77 total blocks is also significant because it ties her with Trina Easley, who set the SF State single-season record for blocked shots in the 1984-85 season.

Junior forward Laura Lawson was named the Female Gator of the Week last week for her performance down south.  Lawson finished the week averaging 11.5 points per game and 11.0 rebounds while shooting 45.8 percent from the field.  Against CSULA she scored 15 points while grabbing 13 rebounds, seven of those rebounds came on offense.  Lawson is second in the CCAA in rebounds per game, averaging 9.2 and 57th in the nation, her 73 offensive rebounds is tops in the CCAA and 35th in the nation.

Humboldt State enters Friday's contest with an overall record of 9-11 and are currently sixth in the CCAA with a 6-7 record.  Over their last 10 games they are 4-6, winning their last game against Cal State San Bernardino at home 80-73 in overtime.

Leading the team in scoring is senior forward Amanda Kunst who is averaging 13.9 points per game.  Second on the team is Kiana Brown who averages 12.0 points per contest, against the Gators on Dec. 12 she scored a game-high 20 points in win over SF State.  As a team, the Jacks are averaging 64.0 points per game while shooting 35.2 percent from the field.  Their opponents are averaging 68.2 points per contest and shooting 41.2 percent from the floor.

Friday's contest marks the 68th time these two teams will renew their rivalry.  The series dates back to the 1974-75 season when the Gators defeated the Jacks 50-49.  The last time these two teams faced off was on Dec. 12 when Humboldt State defeated the Gators in Arcata 65-57.

Saturday's contest marks the only time SF State plays the Broncos in the 2015-16 season.  CPP enters this week with 7-13 overall record, and are currently sitting in seventh in the CCAA standings with a 5-8 record in conference play.  On Jan. 20 they fell to host UC San Diego 64-50 and have lost seven of their last 10 games.

As a team, CPP is averaging 60.4 points per game, and shooting 39.6 percent from the field.  Their opponents are averaging 64.3 points per contest and shooting 38.1 percent from the floor.  Leading the team in scoring is freshman guard Jordyn Shane, who is averaging 11.0 points per contest.

Saturday's contest against the Broncos is the 49th time these two teams will have squared off.  All-time the Gators are 3-39 against CPP in a series that dates back to the 1976-77 season.  The last time these two teams faced each other the Broncos rallied from a late second half deficit to defeat the Gators 74-67 at The Swamp.

For both Friday and Saturday's game fans can fallow the action online with live stats and live video, which can be accessed on the women's basketball schedule page.  Friday's game against Humboldt State will be televised regionally on Comcast Hometown Network which is Comcast channel 104.  Providing the play-by-play for the game will be Joe Castellano with Dan Dibley providing the analysis and Kate Rooney will be reporting from the sidelines.
