SAN FRANCISCO--  SF State's baseball team will continue its non-conference part of their 2016 schedule with a three-game series against Academy of Art this weekend, Feb. 19-21.  The series opener will be this Friday, February 19 at 6pm at Laney College's Field of Dreams in Oakland.  The teams then will travel to SF State's Maloney Field on Saturday for a 1pm first pitch.  The series finale will be on Sunday also at 1pm at Laney College's Field of Dreams.

The Gators come into this weekend's series with Academy of Art with a 2-4 overall record after facing Fresno Pacific in a three-game series in Fresno, Calif.  This will be the third straight weekend that SF State has faced a West Region Division II opponent from the PacWest Conference.  The Gators lost three close games to the Sunbirds (5-2, 3-2 and 5-3) over the weekend as SF State was in all three games.
In the opener on Friday, the quartet of Ryan Bohet, Ulices Moreno, Brent Montgomery and Jackson Gentiles gave up just four hits and five runs (one earned), striking out 7 and walking five in 9 innings of work.  Bohnet pitched 5.1 innings, giving up three hits, three runs (one earned), striking out five and walking two.  Joe Chedid and Chad Thurston each scored the Gators' runs with Carter Gambrell with a run batted in with a single in the sixth inning.

Then on Saturday, the two teams played a doubleheader with the Sunbirds taking both of the games.  In the opener on Saturday, Brett Elgin pitched 3.2 scoreless innings of relief, giving up just three hits, striking out one and walking four and Dylan Bell pitched the final 0.2 scoreless innings.  Jake Faulkner had two of the Gators' six hits while scoring one of SF State's two runs.  Myles Franklin scored a run and drove one in too with Chedid driving in the Gator other run.  In the series finale on Saturday, SF State took a 3-2 lead on a two-run one-out single by Bryce Brooks which drove in Alex Kotheimer and Chris Nicholson in its half of the fifth inning.  The Sunbirds came back with a three-run fifth to retake the lead (5-3) for good.  Brooks finished the game going 2-for-3 with two RBIs with Kotheimer scoring two of SF State's three runs.  Ryan Burke drove in the Gators' first run in their half of the first inning with a single.

Chedid recorded a no-decision in the start for SF State, pitching 3.2 innings of four-hit ball, giving up two unearned runs, striking out two and walking three.  Dillon Hauser (1-1) picked up the loss relief, and Peter Reyes pitched two innings of relief, giving up two hits, one run, and striking out two.  SF State had a chance to tie or take the lead in its half of the seventh inning as the Gators loaded the bases, but the Sunbirds struck out the last SF State batter to preserve the Sunbird victory.

As a team, the Gators are batting .209 and have a 2.49 earned run average.  Carter Gambrell and Ryan Burke lead the way with their respective .385 and .309 batting averages followed by Conner Fraser at .295 and Alex Kotheimer at .286.  Nick Jackson leads the team with his three runs scored and two stolen bases.  Gambrel and Fraser each have a team leading five hits with Joe Chedid leading the way with his four runs batted in.  SF State has 8 extra base-hits (six doubles, one triple and one home run).  Fraser has two doubles, Myles Franklin with a triple and Chedid with the home run.

7 Gator pitchers have a 0.96 or lower earned run average with six with a 0.00.  Of those seven, four have pitched at least 2.1 innings this season.  Chedid leads the way with a 0.00 ERA in 7.2 innings of work followed by Bohnet's 0.96 ERA in 9.1 innings.  Elgin and Montgomery each have recorded a 0.00 ERA with Elgin pitching 6.1 innings and Montgomery 2.1.  Bohnet leads the team with his 9 strikeouts followed by Peter Reyes with five and Chedid with four.  Reyes also has the Gators' lone save of the season.  Moreno and Houser each have recorded the Gators' victories.

SF State will return to the diamond this weekend for a three-game non-conference series with Academy of Art.  The Urban Knights took two of three games from Chico State on the road this past weekend (4-0, 3-8 and 9-7) to improve to 2-4 on the season after dropping three games to Cal Sate East Bay (7-0, 5-2 and 11-1).

Coming off a 2-1 series win at Chico State, the Urban Knights are batting .22 and have a team earned run average of 6.43.  Greg Ivory leads the team with his .353 batting average while he is tied with Joseph Marchini each with three runs batted in while Cody Edmonds is one of three Urban Knights that has scored three runs.  Brett Boyee and Josh Lopez have recorded their two wins.  Boyse also has a team low 3.07 earned run average and team high 5 strikeouts.

After this weekend's three-game series with Academy of Art, the Gators will have four home games next week beginning on Tuesday, February 23 at 2pm hosting Sonoma State in a non-conference game.  They will then host nationally ranked Cal Poly Pomona in a three-game CCAA series Feb. 27-28.
