SAN FRANCISCO– Coming off a three-game series sweep of crosstown foe, Academy of Art, the SF State Gator baseball team will host four games including their conference opening series against the nationally ranked Cal Poly Pomona Broncos. The Gators are 5-4 heading into their Tuesday non-conference game with Sonoma State at 2pm at Maloney Field.
SF State took all three games from the Urban Knights this past weekend 3-2, 5-1 and 7-5 behind some stellar pitching and clutch hitting by the Gators. They won the series opener 3-2 on Friday evening in Oakland behind the pitching quartet of
Ryan Bohnet,
Dylan Bell,
Brent Montgomery and
Peter Reyes. Bohnet pitched 5 innings of 5-hit ball, giving up one run and striking out a career high 8 batters in the start for the victors.
Bell pitched one inning, giving up three hits, one run, striking out one and walking one. Montgomery pitched two scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts en route to his first win in a Gator uniform. Reyes pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save of the season.
In their 5-1 win in San Francisco on Saturday afternoon,
Matthew Hernandez (1-2) recorded his first win as a Gator as he pitched 7.2 innings, giving up 6 hits, one unearned run and striking out four. Montgomery pitched a scoreless third of inning with
Ulices Moreno pitching a scoreless ninth to preserve the 5-1 victory. SF State pounded out 11 hits in the game with three batters with two hits apiece in
Bryce Brooks,
Chad Thurston and
Andrew Breen.
Then in the series finale, the Gators took a 4-0 lead in the first inning and held on for the 7-5 victory. Brooks had three of the Gators' 10 hits along with driving in two runs and scoring twice.
Connor Fraser also had a multiple-hit day going 2-for-5.
Joe Chedid recorded the win in the start of SF State improving to 1-0. Four Gator relievers in
Jackson Gentes, Moreno, Reyes and
Brett Elgin, pitched four innings of relief, giving up three hits and one unearned run. Elgin pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.
For the season, SF State is batting .245 and has a team 2.31 earned run average. Two batters are batting over .300 in
Carter Gambrell (.375) and Brooks (.321). Chedid and
Dalton Pizzuti each are batting .273 followed by Fraser at .269. Brooks has a team high 9 hits while Chedid and Fraser each have a team leading two doubles.
Myles Franklin has the Gators' triple and Chedid has their home run. Chedid also leads the team with his five runs batted while outfielder
Nick Jackson has a team leading six runs scored and four stolen bases. Bohnet leads the team with his team low 1.26 earned run average and 17 strikeouts with only three walks in 14.1 innings. Five pitchers have recorded the Gators' victories in Montgomery, Moreno, Chedid, Hernandez and
Dillon Houser.
SF State will first face Bay Area rival, Sonoma State, in a rare non-conference affair this Tuesday at 2pm at Maloney Field. The Seawolves are 3-8 after splitting their four-game series with Concordia-Oregon. They are batting .252 as a team and have a 3.42 earned run average. Ryan O'Malley leads the team with his .455 batting average, 18 hits, 10 runs scored, 7 doubles, 11 runs batted in and three home runs. Seven other Seawolves are batting over .300 in Brett Sesma (.400), Matt Richards (.368), Daniel Caresio (.344), Rupert Watson (.333), Spencer Neve (.320), Tyler Glenn (.308) and Brian Bynum (.300). Ryan Luna has a team low 0.00 earned run average with his 1-0 record, 12 strikeouts and just five walks in 13 innings of work. Ricky Clark has a 1.69 earned run average with a team leading 18 strikeouts in 11 innings pitched.
After Tuesday's game with Sonoma State, the Gator will entertain No. 25 Cal Poly Pomona in a three-game series starting this Saturday, February 27 with an 11am starting doubleheader. The Broncos come into their non-conference game this evening with Vanguard University with a 6-3 record. They are coming off of two non-conference losses at the hands of CCAA opponents in No. 11 UC San Diego (10-2) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (6-2).
They are batting .291 as a team with a 2.89 earned run average. Five Broncos are batting over .300 in Nicholas Bruno (.407), Caleb Romo (.400), Michael Erb (.400), Chris Stratton (.379) and Jared James (.357). Bruno and Stratton each lead the team with 11 hits while Stratton also leads the team with his 8 stolen bases. Jared James has driven in a team high 10 runs and is tied with Nic Hernandez each with two home runs.
Ryan Olson has a team low 0.00 earned run average with a 2-0 record, 13 strikeouts and just three walks in 10.1 innings pitched. Peter Bayer has 17 strikeouts in 7.2 innings of work for the Broncos.
After this weekend's three-game series with Cal Poly Pomona, the Gators will travel to Carson, Calif., for a three-game series beginning on March 5 at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
