SAN FRANCISCO– After not playing a game since March 5 at Cal State Dominguez Hills due to the rain in the Bay Area the past week, the SF State Gators will look to begin a four-game conference series this weekend with No. 8 Cal State Monterey Bay. The home-away series will begin at 3pm with a single nine-inning game in Seaside. The series will then move to SF State's Maloney Field for a noon starting doubleheader this Saturday. The four-game series will conclude in Seaside this Sunday at noon.
The Gators are coming off a 1-2 weekend at Cal State Dominguez Hills, March 4-5. SF State opened up the series with a 7-5 victory which they pounded out 12 hits.
Bryce Brooks led the way going 4-for-5 with
Jake Faulkner and
Chris Nicholson each with two hits apiece.
Ryan Bohnet (1-1) picked up his first win of the season, pitching 5 innings in the start, giving up two hits, striking out two and walking one.
Ulices Moreno recorded his first save as a Gator, pitching 2.2 innings, giving up two hits and one run while striking out two.
Then in the second game of the series on Saturday, SF State lost 9-2 as the Gators had just five hits (one each from
Dalton Pizzuti,
Alex Kotheimer,
Andrew Breen, Faulkner and Nicholson).
Matthew Hernandez (1-3) suffered the loss in the start for the Gators.
Shane Martin pitched two scoreless innings of relief while giving up just one hit. In the series finale, the Gators were shutout by the Toros (9-0) as Cal State Dominguez Hills' pitchers allowed just five hits by SF State. Two of those five hits came off the bat of
Myles Franklin.
Going into this weekend's four-game series with the 8
th ranked Otters, the Gators are now 8-8 overall and 2-4 in the CCAA. They are batting .240 with
Carter Gambrell leading the way with his .333 batting average. Two other Gators are batting over .300 in Brooks (.316) and Faulkner (.303). Brooks leads the team with his 7 runs scored and 18 hits while Nicholson has driven in a team leading 7 runs. Other team batting leaders are:
Connor Fraser (three doubles), Franklin (one triple), Chedid (one home run) and
Nick Jackson (four stolen bases).
SF State's pitching staff has a team earned run average of 3.51 with
Ryan Bohnet's 2.42 leading the way. Montgomery has a 0.93 earned run average with his 9.2 innings pitched in seven appearances. Montgomery has recorded two of the Gators' 8 wins with six others each with one in Bohnet, Chedid, Hernandez,
Nathan Pisciotta and
Dillon Houser.
Peter Reyes has recorded a team leading two saves and
Brett Elgin and
Ulices Moreno each have one save. Bohnet also has a team leading 22 strikeouts in 26 innings pitched in his five starts.
As a team, the Gators are sixth in the CCAA with their four saves and fourth in opponent's batting average (.245).
Ryan Bohnet is 11
th in the conference in earned run average and 12
th in opponent's batting average (.220). Reyes is tied for 7
th with his two saves.
The Otters are 15-3 overall and 4-2 in the CCAA and have not played since March 8 when they swept a doubleheader from Stanislaus State. Cal State Monterey Bay is batting .301 as a team with five Otters with over a .340 batting average in Jeffery Amaral (.425), Brian Bostjancic (.415), Hayden Duer (.383), Myles Hager (.353) and Kevin Davison (.342). Davison leads the Otters with in runs scored (19), hits (26), doubles (10) and runs batted in (19). Duer has hit a team high 7 home runs and posted a team leading .783 slugging percentage while Bostjancic has a team high .510 on-base percentage.
As a pitching staff, the Otter have a team earned run average of 4.10 with Gabe Katich leading the way with a 2.12. Katich also has a team leading 29 strikeouts and is tied with Ryan Boydstun each with three victories. Kyle Narahara has recorded three of the Otters' 8 saves on the season.
After this weekend, the Gators will return to the diamond on March 25-26 when they host Cal State L.A. in a three-game series at Maloney Field.
