SAN FRANCISCO– Coming off a four-game series against nationally ranked Cal State Monterey Bay, the SF State Gators will return to the diamond this Wednesday, March 23 at 3pm when they travel to Hayward, Calif., for a CCAA game with Cal State East Bay. After Wednesday's game, the Gators will host Cal State L.A. in a three-game series beginning this Friday, March 25 with a 11am starting doubleheader.
The Gators are currently 9-11 overall and 3-7 in the CCAA after going 1-3 against the Otters. Cal State Monterey Bay won the first three games over SF State 14-4, 7-0 and 8-4 with the Gators taking the series finale 7-4.
In the Gators' 7-4 victory on Sunday afternoon in Seaside, the Gators took a 3-0 after six innings as starter
Peter Reyes held the Otters scoreless. Reyes picked up a no-decision the start for SF State as he pitched five scoreless innings, giving up four hits, walking two and striking out four.
SF State took a 1-0 lead on a RBI double by
Ryan Burke in the top of the first inning which brought in
Bryce Brooks. The visitors doubled their lead when
Joe Chedid's double brought in
Chris Nicholson in the top of the second inning. The Gators added another run in the sixth inning when
Myles Franklin scored on a fielder's choice by Chedid. Franklin reached on a lead-off single.
The Otters cut the deficit to 3-2 with a two-run sixth. The Gators came right back with a run in the seventh on a run scoring single by Franklin which scored Brooks to make it 4-2 SF State. Cal State Monterey Bay tied the game at 4-4 on a two-run home run by Justin Flores in the bottom of the seventh.
The score remained tied at 4-4 until the Gator ninth. With runners on first and second and two outs,
Andrew Breen hit the second pitch he saw for a two-run triple down the left field line which brought in
Jake Faulkner and Franklin with the go-ahead run and an insurance run. Breen then scored on a two-out single by
Logan Marston to increase the Gator lead to 7-4.
Brent Montgomery (3-0) picked up the in relief for the Gators, pitching two scoreless innings, giving up no hits, striking out two and walking one. For the season now, Montgomery has a 0.73 earned run average, striking out 9 batters in 9 appearances. He has pitched in 12.1 innings and the opponents are batting .156 against him on the mound. SF State managed 10 hits in the series finale with Franklin and Burke each with two hits. Franklin along with Brooks each crossed home plate twice and Breen and Chedid each drove in two runs.
For the season, the Gators are batting .237 while their pitching staff as a team earned run average of 4.10.
Myles Franklin leads the way for SF State with his .313 average followed by Brooks at .304. Franklin also leads the team with his .417 slugging percentage with
Jake Faulkner posting a team high .460 on-base percentage. Franklin is tied for the team lead with Breen with one triple. Chedid has a driven in a team leading 11 runs and has a team high four doubles. He and Marston each have hit home runs for the Gators this season.
Also leading the Gators are Brooks (10 runs scored and 21 hits) while he is tied with
Nick Jackson with four stolen bases.
Ryan Bohnet leads the Gators' pitching staff with a team low 2.70 earned run average and 22 strikeouts in 26.2 innings pitched. Montgomery has recorded a team leading three wins and Reyes leads the team with his two saves.
In the latest CCAA statistical report that was released this afternoon, four Gators are in the top ten in four categories. Faulkner is tied for third with his 7 hit by pitches and
Chris Nicholson is tied for sixth with three sacrifice flies. Montgomery's three wins ties him for 8
th and Reyes' two saves ties him for 9
th.
The Gators will first travel to Hayward this Wednesday for a 3pm conference game at Pioneer Field against Cal State East Bay in Hayward. This is a make-up date of the four-game series that was washed out between the two teams, March 12-14. The two teams have also re-scheduled game two of the four-game series next Wednesday, March 30 also at 3pm, this time at SF State's Maloney Field.
Cal State East Bay is 13-7 overall and 4-5 in the CCAA after splitting its four-game series with Sonoma State. The Pioneers are batting .327 as a team and have a 4.39 team earned run average. Rudy Navarro leads the team with his .493 batting average, 34 hits, 20 runs batted in, 11 doubles and .652 slugging percentage. Michael Thomas has scored a team leading 21 times while Marcus Wise has a team high 8 stolen bases and Chris Porter has hit three home runs to lead the Pioneers. The Pioneer pitching staff is led by Alex Vesia's 31 strikeouts and 3.58 earned run average while Donavon Ramirez has three of the Gators' 13 wins and Derek Oetken has recorded a team leading four saves.
Cal State L.A. is 6-18 overall and 5-8 in the CCAA after going 0-3 this past weekend against nationally ranked Chico State. The Golden Eagles are batting .242 as a team and have a team 4.43 earned run average. Ryan Welker leads the team with his .306 batting average and 30 hits while Nathan Navarrete has a team leading 15 runs scored, 8 doubles, two home runs and .444 slugging percentage. Isaac Dominguez and Dakota Hernandez each have driven in a team leading 12 runs.
Ralph Ramirez leads the Golden Eagles' pitching staff with a 1.72 earned run average while Gabriel Gentner has their two saves. Christian Broussard Jr. has a team high 22 strikeouts and six different pitchers have recorded at least one win this season. Besides their doubleheader at 11am on Friday, the Gators and Cal State L.A. will play a noon starting single game on Saturday, March 26.
After this weekend, SF State will return to the diamond April 2-3 in San Bernardino for a three-game series with Cal State San Bernardino at Fiscalini Field.
