Box Score TURLOCK, Calif.--- Three Stanislaus State pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout in the Warriors' 5-0 series finale victory over the visiting SF State Gators. With the Warriors winning this afternoon in Turlock, the two teams split the four-game weekend series each winning on their home diamond.
"(Peter) Reyes was terrific today, unfortunately our defense and offense let us down," said SF State head coach
Tony Schifano. "It's a long season and I feel like the guys are worn down. We are going to rest some guys to get their legs back and finish strong."
SF State (18-20, 11-16 CCAA) had two chances early in the game to take the lead. In the Gator second,
Logan Marston had a one-out single went to second when
Andrew Breen walked with two outs. Warrior starter, Micah Hall, induced an inning ending ground out to second.
Then in the Gator fourth,
Chris Nicholson reached on a fielding error went to second on Marston's second hit of the game with one out. Hall then induced the next two SF State batters to fly out to left field and ground out back to him to end the Gator scoring threat.
The Warriors broke the scoreless tie in their half of the fourth as Patrick Mulry lead off the inning with his ninth home run of the season, a solo shot to right field. Gino Franceschetti singled, went to second when Michael Chavarria reached on a Gator error. Aldo Koutsoyanopu had a bunt single to load the bases with no outs.
Peter Reyes then induced the next Warrior to fly out to
Nick Jackson in center field, but Franceschetti scored to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. The next Warrior struck out to end the inning and Stanislaus State leading 2-0.
Stanislaus State (20-20, 11-17 CCAA) increased its lead to 4-0 lead with a two-run sixth inning. Chavarria had a lead-off walk, and then scored on a one-out double by Kyle Nixon. Still with one out, Nixon scored on a single by Garrett Serino to give the hosts a 4-0 lead.
SF State had another chance to break into the run column on the scoreboard in its half of the eighth inning.
Ryan Taylor led off the inning reaching on a two-base error, but Chris Senn induced the next Gator batter to line out to second for a double play.
The Gators had another chance in the second with two outs
Bryce Brooks and
Noeh Martinez had back to back singles, but Senn struck out the final batter of the inning to preserve the 4-0 Warrior lead.
The hosts added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 5-0 lead into the final inning.
Alex Kotheimer had a one-out single for SF State in the top of the ninth, went to second on a wild pitch but was stranded at second. Warrior reliever, Travis Johnston struck out the next batter and ended the game inducing the last Gator to line out to third.
Hall (2-2) pitched 7 scoreless innings, giving up just two hits, walking one and striking out two. Chris Senn pitched one scoreless inning of relief, striking out one and giving up two hits while Johnston pitched a scoreless ninth, giving up one hit and striking out one.
Reyes (1-3) pitched 6 innings, giving up 7 hits, four runs (three earned), striking out two and walking one. Four Gator relievers in
Brett Elgin,
Nathan Pisciotta,
Jackson Gentes and
Grant Vogenthaler pitched three innings of relief, giving up two hits, one run and walking two.
SF State will begin a five-game home stand this Tuesday, April 26 as the Gators host the Hawai'i-Hilo Vulcans in a non-conference game with a scheduled first-pitch of 2pm at Maloney Field. They will then host Chico State in a four-game CCAA series beginning this Friday, April 29 with a single game starting at 3pm.
