Box Score 2 ROHNERT PARK--- The Sonoma State Seawolves swept a conference doubleheader from the visiting SF State Gators this afternoon 5-1 and 8-3 at Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park. The two teams will conclude the four-game series tomorrow at noon at SF State's Maloney Field. Prior to the game at 11:30am, the Gators will recognize their five seniors with a Senior Day ceremony.
Game one was scoreless until the Seawolf third inning. Daniel Caresio, who finished the game 3-for-4, had a lead-off single and later scored on a two-out run scoring single by Tyler Glenn. The hosts increased their lead to 3-0 with a two-run fourth inning capped by a two-out single by Caresio which scored Rayson Romero.
Sonoma State added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Glenn had a one-out single, went to second on a wild pitch. He advanced to third on a single by Matt Richards. With two outs, Cody Morris tripled home both Seawolves to give the hosts a 5-0 lead.
SF State (22-25, 14-21 CCAA) had a chance to break in the runs column in its half of the sixth ining.
Nick Jackson had a lead-off walk and went to second when
Bryce Brooks was hit by a pitch. Then with one out,
Ryan Burke reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners but Cal Becker induced the Gator batter to foul out to third base and end the Gator scoring threat.
The Gators cut the Seawolf lead to 5-1 when
Dalton Pizzuti scored on a sacrifice fly by
Andrew Breen. Pizzuti,
Noeh Martinez and
Joe Chedid had three straight singles to load the bases and begin the Gator seventh. Breen then drove in Pizzuti with the Gators' first run on a sacrifice fly to left field. Jackson then singled with one out and loaded the bases once again, but Jackson Zarubin induced an inning ending double play.
SF State had another rally stop short in its last at bat in the ninth. Chedid walked with two outs and Breen doubled him to third. Jackson walked to load the baes, but Cody Bennett came on to preserve the Seawolf victory as the last Gator flew out to right field.
Becker (3-4) picked up the win in the start for Sonoma State, pitching 6 innings, giving up four hits, one run, walking three and striking out six. Bennett recorded his team leading fifth save of the season by pitching 0.1 scoreless innings.
Sonoma State had 11 hits on the day, capped by Caresio's three-hit day. Glenn and Romero had two hits apiece.
Ryan Bohnet (3-3) record the loss for the Gators, pitching 5 innings, giving up 9 hits, five runs (four earned) and striking out four.
Matthew Hernandez pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, giving up two hits and walking two while
Nathan Pisciotta pitched a 0.1 scoreless inning, striking out one and walking one. Six different Gators had one hit apiece.
In the nightcap, SF State had a chance to take the lead in its half of the second inning.
Logan Marston had a lead-off single, went to third on a single by
Chris Nicholson. Seawolf starter, Ryan Luna, struck out the next Gator batter and then induced an inning ending double play.
Sonoma State took a 6-0 lead in its half of the third inning capped by a two-out grand slam home run by Trevor Abrams.
The Gators once again had a chance to cut the Seawolf deficit, but they could not take advantage of a scoring opportunity in their half of the fourth inning. Nicholson walked with two outs, went to second on a single by Chedid but Luna got the final out on a fly out to right field.
Sonoma State (21-26, 19-17 CCAA) added two insurance runs in the fifth inning on a two-run two-out double by Abrams.
The Gators cut the Sonoma State lead in half with a four-run sixth inning. With two outs, Nicholson and Chedid walked. Nicholson scored on a single by
Connor Fraser for the Gators' first run of the game.
Alex Kotheimer, reached on a fielding error by Sonoma State, which Chedid scored on and cut the deficit to 8-2. Still two outs, pinch-hitter
Carter Gambrell was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Breen walked to bring in Fraser and then Franklin walked to bring in Kotheimer to cut the Seawolf lead to 8-4. Mitch Coombs came in to relief and got the final out on a ground out to short.
Coombs retired the Gators in order in the seventh as the Seawolves took the night cap 8-4 for his first save of the season.
Luna (4-4) recorded the win for the hosts, pitching 5.2 innings, giving up 6 hits, four runs (one earned), striking out four and walking four. Coombs pitched 1.1 scoreless relief innings. The hosts had 10 hits with three players each with two hits apiece in Jared English, Grant St. Martin and Trevor Abrams.
Ulices Moreno (2-3) picked up the loss in the start for SF State, pitching 4 innings, giving up 7 hits, 6 runs, striking out three and walking one.
Shane Martin pitched one inning of relief while
Grant Vogenthaler pitched a scoreless sixth for SF State.
Jackson had two of the Gators' six hits in the night cap and recorded his team leading 17 base of the season, which places him one away from breaking into the top ten career lists in stolen bases. He has 32 in his three-year career at SF State.
The Gators will finish off their regular season tomorrow at noon with a single nine-inning game with Sonoma State. Prior to the game at 11:30am, SF State will recognize its five seniors in
