SAN FRANCISCO-- After going 1-1 this past weekend, the San Francisco State Gators will return to the pitch this Thursday and Saturday, September 8 and 10 when they participate in the Golden Gate Classic in San Francisco. The Golden Gate Classic will be hosted by Academy of Art University, but will take place at Cox Stadium on the campus of San Francisco State University.
The Gators opened up their season last Thursday with a 1-0 heartbreaking loss to Hope International. The Royals scored in the 19
th minute on a penalty kick. The Gators controlled the majority of the match as they held a 7-2 corner kick advantage and a 10-7 advantage in shot attempts.
Emmanuel Jimenez had three saves in goal for the hosts.
San Francisco State rebounded on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 win over William Jessup as
Jordan Wusstig connected on what proved be the game winner in the 44
th minute on a ball from
Jonny Villeda. The Gators sealed the win with a late goal by
Richard Leon in the 89
th minute on a ball from Wusstig. Jimenez recorded three saves in goal for the hosts. Wusstig leads the Gators with his three points (one goal and assist) and is tied with Leon for the team lead with one goal. Villeda has the Gators' other assist on the season. Jimenez has posted a 0.50 goals against average with a .857 saves percentage and 6 saves.
The Gators will first face Holy Names University this Thursday, September 8 at 4pm in the Golden Gate Classic at Cox Stadium. The Hawks lost their season opening match this past Sunday 1-0 at Cal State East Bay. The Pioneers scored the game-winner in the 42
nd minute. The match was evenly played as Cal State East Bay held a 6-5 advantage in shot attempts, but the Hawks held a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Last season, Holy Names went 2-15-1 including 1-11-1 in the Pac West. San Francisco State defeated the Hawks 1-0 last season in mid-September at San Francisco.
San Francisco State will then face Academy of Art this Saturday at 4pm in the Second Round of the Golden Gate Classic at Cox Stadium. The Urban Knights opened up their 2016 season with a 3-0 loss at Cal State East Bay last Friday evening in Hayward. Cal State East Bay held a 20-9 advantage in shot attempts including a 10-7 shot on goal advantage. Academy of Art defeated the Gators 1-0 last season in the Kezar Classic at Kezar Stadium as the Urban Knights connected on a penalty kick goal in the 98
th minute.
After this weekend, the Gators will open up California Collegiate Athletic Association play hosting two matches on September 14 and 16. San Francisco State will host Cal State Monterey Bay in both team's conference opener on the 14
th at 12:30pm. Then on Friday the 16
th, Chico State will come to San Francisco for a 12:30pm starting match with the Gators at Cox Stadium.
