TURLOCK, Calif. – After a record-breaking weekend that featured 11 first-place finishes, the No. 8 San Francisco State track & field team took home the CCAA Championship. It is the first title in program history and the second CCAA Championship in SF State history after the women's soccer team took home the hardware in 2010.
"Winning the conference championship has been our vision for the past four years," said Head Coach
Kendra Reimer. "We have amazing assistant coaches who have fueled the fire and accelerated the process. The women in the program are relentless and have worked endlessly to become a championship team. I am beyond proud of everything they have achieved this season."
SF State dethrones Chico State as the Champion, who has won the past eight CCAA Championships. The 214 points by the Gators are the most points recorded by the champion in the last eight years.
In addition to the team title,
Destiny Mack-Talalemotu earned the CCAA High Point Award, given to the highest point earner from the weekend after she notched 31. She also won the Field Athlete of the Week, while
Monisha Lewis took home Newcomer of the Meet.
Coach Reimer won her second-straight Coach of the Year award after her team's record-breaking performance.
SF State notched 11 All-CCAA honors on Saturday, bringing the total for the weekend to a program-best 15 including 11 first-place finishes, three second, and one third.
The day began as
Courtney Massengale won her flight with a program-record 53.68m in discus, a mark which eclipsed her previous program record by .05 meters. The result not only improves her automatic qualifying distance but it is also the fourth-best throw in the nation.
Destiny Mack-Talalemotu took second in the flight to qualify with a throw of 47.73m, and hit 50.22m on her sixth and final attempt which is just off her PR to secure second place in the event. The duo were the only competitors to hit above 50 meters.
The pair of finishes propelled SF State to first place in the Championships with 65 points and the Gators never looked back en route to the title.
The 4x100 took first place with a time of 46.02, giving SF State back-to-back titles in the event. The Gators were led by
Janelle Bandayrel,
Maya Cook,
Timarya Baynard, and
Jazmine Smith, and the result is the sixth-fastest time in the country.
Monisha Lewis joined the All-Conference party as she took gold in the 100m hurdles with a 13.53, which ties her program record that she set earlier this year. In the 400m, Baynard took first with a provisional qualifier of 54.64 (the fifth-best time in the country) and Smith took home silver with a personal-best 55.05, another provisional qualifier.
Bianca Bryant tied the stadium record in the 800m, clocking in at 2:09.60 for the first-place finish and a provisional qualifying time.
Vanessa Koontz made it two-straight All-CCAA honors in the 400m hurdles, this time taking the top spot with a time of 1:00.19, which is a PR, the second-fastest time in program history, and the ninth-fastest time in the nation.
Baynard made it three golds as she sped through the 200m with a personal-best 24.08, which is a provisional qualifier and the ninth-fastest time in the nation. The result gives the Gators two-straight golds in the event after
Atiya Harvey took first last year. Massengale notched her second first-place finish of the afternoon in javelin, tossing a provisional-qualifying distance of 42.30m.
Both Massengale and Mack-Talalemotu recorded three All-CCAA honors during the meet, coming the first field athletes since Luisa Musika in 2011 to take home three All-Conference awards.
Lastly came the 4x400 relay, and SF State notched its 11
th first-place finish of the weekend as Baynard, Smith, Bryant, and
Alexis Henry broke the CCAA record with a time of 3:41.64. The result is the fifth-fastest time in the country.
Baynard made it two-straight seasons with four All-CCAA awards in the 200m, 400m, 4x100, and 4x400.
