LOUISVILLE, Kentucky - Brylynn Vallejos of the San Francisco State softball team has been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II All-West Region First Team, the organization announced.
Vallejos was a force to be reckoned with this season as she established herself as a one of the top all-around players in the country. The freshman led the CCAA and is 17th in the nation with a .442 batting average, which is the highest average in Gator history. Her 95 hits this season shatter the previous program record for hits in a season of 83 that was set in 2007, and are the third-most in the NCAA this season as well as the fifth-most ever in CCAA history. On the base paths, Vallejos led the team and the conference with 32 stolen bases and was only thrown out eight times. The outfielder also boasts a .970 fielding mark and contributed ten assists and 87 putouts.
The Reno, Nevada native has already garnered numerous accolades this season, and was named to the Schutt Sport/NFCA National Player of the Year Top 25 last month and was just one of two freshmen on the list. Vallejos was also named the CCAA Freshman of the Year and to the All-CCAA First Team as well as the CCAA All-Tournament Team. Last week she took home D2CCA All-West Region First Team recognition, and was one of five CCAA representatives. She becomes the first Gator All-West Region honoree since 2010 when Karolyn Gubbine took home the plaudit.
This season the Gators reached the CCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007 where they knocked off the top-seeded No. 13 UC San Diego Tritons for their fifth win over a ranked team this year. SF State also clinched its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2006 where they opened up play with a 6-3 win against Western Oregon to make it four-straight NCAA Tournament-opener victories.
