GOLDEN, Colo. — The No. 25 San Francisco State wrestling team suffered back-to-back losses on Friday, falling 27-20 to New Mexico Highlands and 32-13 to No. 18 Colorado Mines.
The Gators are now 7-5 and have now lost three straight after going undefeated in December. They have been shorthanded since losing starters No. 10
Nathan Cervantez (133 lb.) and
Alex Felix (141 lb.) to injury in a home dual versus No. 11 Adams State.
SF State got off to an early lead versus the Cowboys (1-1) thanks to a tech fall by
Aaron Perez at 125 pounds. However, the Gators faltered in their next three bouts, falling by tech fall to even the match and suffering a pair of pins to fall behind 17-5. No. 12
Maxamillian Schneider, who was earlier in the week
named RMAC Wrestler of the Week, needed just 24 seconds to pin opponent Allen Michel. The win at 157 pounds pulled the Gators to within six points but NMHU bounced back and took the 165 lb. and 174 lb. bouts. No. 5
Justin Pichedwatana picked up an 8-3 decision at 184 pounds to pull the Gators to back within 10 points. At 197 lb.,
John Chetwynd was seconds away from winning his bout but suffered a last-second reversal in a tough 2-1 decision. However, the Gators needed at least a major decision to keep the heavyweight bout meaningful.
Justin Ramos came through with a pin in 24 seconds but the Gators came up short, 27-20.
The Gators fell behind 15-0 early to the Orediggers (4-2) and never recovered.
Mason Boutain picked up a major decision at 149 lb. Schneider had to work for it but finally pinned Ryan Fidel in 6:55. Pichedwatana picked up another win at 184 lb, earning a narrow 5-4 decision thanks to riding time.
Head Coach
Jason Welch: "Today we struggled against some solid teams but nonetheless came out with some good victories. It's great to see our RMAC competition now so that we can better prepare for Regionals in March. We'll be ready for the postseason when we see them again."
The Golden Gators host the 43rd Annual California Collegiate Open on Saturday, January 25. This year's event moves to campus' Student Life and Event Center/Annex I, located at 1 North State Drive.
