Hall of Fame
Don Peter "Pete" Liebengood played football for the Gators from 1962-65 and was named All-Far West Conference offensive left tackle in 1965. He earned hia Bachelor of Arts in radio, television, and film in 1967. Liebengood was inducted into the San Francisco State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1988 and was inducted into the San Francisco State Gridiron Hall of Fame in October 2017.
Liebengood served in the California National Guard after college, then began his career as a sports broadcaster for KCRA Sacramento, then he returned so San Francisco, where he worked as a sports reporter, anchor, and producer for KRON San Francisco. He also did work for ESPN and NBC Sports and made play-by-play contributions in college basketball and football (including "The Play" in the 1982 Big Game), boxing, rodeo, tennis, and World Cup skiing. Liebengood wrote and published six novels in the final seven years of his life.Â
Liebengood was born to Don and Jean Liebengood in Pontiac, Illinois, on Sept. 17, 1944. He attended San Marcos High School ('62), where he excelled in football, and was an All-American in 1962.
From 2010-14, Liebengood operated Fresh Takes, a nonprofit media arts center dedicated to under-served youth. He also served on many non-profit boards, including PeninsulaTV, Redwood City Police Activities League (PAL), Rotary Club of Redwood City, and the San Mateo County Sheriff Activities League (SAL). He served as president of both the Rotary and SAL, and received numerous awards which recognized his dedication to the community.
Liebengood, passed away on Dec. 22 at the age of 73.
