ASHLAND, Ore. – The San Francisco State wrestling team returned to action with a pair of matches on Saturday, defeating Oklahoma City, 24-12, before falling to host Southern Oregon by a 31-6 count at McNeal Pavilion in Ashland, Ore. With the split, the Gators move to 1-3 in dual-meet competition this season.
Sophomore Josh Nolan, senior
Marques Gales and junior Vincent Bordi and each posted major decisions to key SF State's win over OCU. Nolan registered his first win of the 2008-09 campaign with an 11-3 victory over Will Shelton at 149, while Gales came away with a 19-5 triumph over Jake Mabry at 184. Bordi then followed with a 12-4 defeat of Colin MacMillan at 197.
Elsewhere, junior
Steve Franklin won his seventh match of the year with a 3-0 decision over Corey Johnson at 285, while
Ben Lockett surged past Jeremy Garner, 12-5, at 141. Senior
Curtis Schurkamp, ranked No. 1 at 125 in the latest NCAA Division II poll, received a forfeit.
SF State then faced a tough test against Southern Oregon, which entered the day with a No. 4 ranking in the NAIA team poll. However, the Gators were able to post just two victories against the Raiders. Sophomore
Zach Sesar captured an 8-5 decision over Mike Lauer at 165, while fellow classmate
Arman Ostadsharif emerged victorious at 174 over Tyler Thomas, 5-2.
SF State will have the next two weeks off before travelling to Evanston, Ill., for the Midlands Championships, Dec. 29-30, on the campus of Northwestern University.
